I'm creating this thread because I don't see a general investment thread on BO and there's a plethora of investment knowledge/experience among BO members, that if shared, can be very beneficial to the community. Personally, I've learned a lot from members on how to make better used of my "unused" cash.
You can share how you're actively investing but the thread mostly caters towards passive investing (many of us don't have the luxury of time/energy to daytrade). This is specifically non-card/non-hobby investments lol. What types of accounts/CDs/etc do ya'll have? What percentage of your cash do you allocate towards each? What long-term mutual funds/stocks do you have positions in? How are you investing for your current/future children (if applicable)? Do you have positions in crypto, precious metals, etc? No one needs to share how much they're investing, this isn't a d*** measuring contest either. |

Without talking dollars?
401K which I max out (50% match) Morgan Stanley brokerage account Edward Jones brokerage account Chase Premium Deposit account (liquid dollars still getting 4.5%… I probably allocate too much here) Real Estate equity investments via my company which is when I usually sell something else to get into this The balance sits in a checking or savings account making garbage Percentages I’d have to look at

The light I thought I saw at the end of the tunnel turned out to be a train. #1 has been out for 2 years but may need a grad degree, #2 is headed to a professional master's program, very expensive, and #3 still has 2 years of undergrad left. Next 2-3 years could cost anywhere from $150-250k. I'll never be able to retire, let alone invest money in the stock market.

AMZN stock (part of my salary)
5.3% Texas Regional Bank 1 month CD SGOV (short-dated UST bills) SWVXX (Schwab money market fund) A few individual rolling 1 month T-bills VZ Vanguard Retirement Saver II (closest cash-equivalent available in my 401k) A few grand in various options like CVNA puts. This is mostly very different than 12 months ago. As you can tell, I expect a steady-state in rates. I have de-risked a bit by unloading some AMZN shares, though I am due a bunch more shortly. At the end of 2024, I’ll have enough set aside from AMZN shares alone to put my son through any undergrad program and graduate program of his choosing. Pretty good for a guy that didn’t finish high school.

![]() Muchas gracias! It's called abandoning any thought of retiring and working till I croak. Fortunately I am able to do that with my line of work. I'm already one of the older people the newbies ignore, and that's fine by me.

I dabble. I’m small time. Just bought my first American Eagle silver dollar and a silver bar this year. Wanted to dip a toe into metals/coins. Want to get some platinum and gold as well. Just started February. No clue where to start. Was thinking of gettting an American Eagle for each year back until my birth year.
I have a Robinhood, MooMoo and Charles Schwab account for tradings stocks and some crypto. I have Coinbase for most of my crypto. 401k for work. They match 25% but only up to a certain amount. I should probably ask but I’m lazy. Have a savings account with Ally and money market with Fidelity. I’m just trying to get money out of my checking account as fast as possible. Or I just buy dumb crap.

401k employee max (90% VINIX, 10% cash)
401k employer max (same) 457b employee max (90% RFKTX, 10% cash) 457b employer max (same) Old IRA for trading (right now it’s AAPL, TSLA, FBTC and ~35% cash) Trading account (90% cash, 10% whatever) Checking account (bare minimum cash since it earns less than SPAXX in my trading account) UTMA for my kid (mostly cash right now) I like trading with a very small number of stocks. Easier to focus that way. Too many stocks = too much chase.

For instance, I learned about Fidelity MM (SPAXX) from jcardstore/KhalDrogo because they always talked about it (possibly you too, jplarson). I created my Fidelity account months ago and finally funded it with a significant amount of cash yesterday. Without them sharing about it, I would've never known (sure, that information is available online but there's a lot of information out there that it can be overwhelming too). Quote:

I was so excited about creating the thread that I forgot to share my own details.
- 2 work retirement accounts (TSP, FERS) - Roth IRA (TD Ameritrade) - Fidelity (MM with SPAXX): Created months ago but just funded with a significant cash amount yesterday - Marcus with Goldmans Sachs (HYSA): Created and funded today (had been meaning to do so for at least a month) - Cash (have a good amount of emergency savings remaining so might put these into one of the two aforementioned accounts to let it grow) I also plan to open a 529 account for my kid's future education expenses. |

I’m considering private equity investments as a diversification option. Typically, these investments are in emerging or already established businesses that need financing to grow or restructure. However, I’m aware of the complexities and risks involved, such as the longer timeline for returns and the need for a rigorous selection of opportunities.
It also carries significant financial and legal risks. That’s why I’m thinking of consulting specialists in the field, such as those at Oberheiden P.C., to better understand the process and successfully navigate these investments. Last edited by darthpau3; 01-05-2025 at 06:38 PM. |
