Default 2023 Upper Deck Cosmic

I just got an e-mail about this upcoming set releasing on e-Pack on 6/21/2023. Here's the description:

Quote:
Upper Deck Cosmic trading cards purchased on Upper Deck e-Pack® will feature:

5 cards per pack, 10 packs per box

The physical 50-card Base Set featuring serially-numbered Red and Blue Shift Parallels

At least 1 Operations and Instructions card per box, on average!

Incredible artist-drawn Sketch and Galactic Sketch cards

A variety of amazing inserts like Cosmic Clippings, featuring historic newspapers clippings that depict key dates in Astronomy, and Ultra Deep Field Lenticular Puzzle cards that display red-shifted images from the Hubble Telescope's Ultra Deep Field camera.

The opportunity to complete sets to earn exciting Upper Deck e-Pack® exclusive achievement cards!
https://www.upperdeckepack.com/News/...at_9_00_am_PT_

The pack art says "Discover Astronomical Autographs, Memorabilia, and Original Art Sketch Cards!"

I found a few artists proofs listed on eBay with a 2020 copyright date but no mention of the set anywhere else.

Looks like an actual space related set. Hubble telescope? Hopefully it involves private companies like SpaceX, Virgin Galactic and Blue Origin but probably not.

Love this concept. Curious who the autos will be.

Neil DeGrasse? Buzz Aldrin? Carl Sagan cut? I could only wish.

Got my hopes up, lol. Thought it was a 50-card Marvel Cosmic set with sketch cards and comic clippings.

Interesting for sure. Could be very very cool or very very lame. Hopefully it's priced reasonably.

Hopefully they are astronaut autographs and not artist autographs of people who worked on the set.

It will be interesting to see who the signers are. I don’t think the clippings or sketches of space scenes will be enough to carry interest in the set beyond a week. However if they get cool signers and/or cool auto achievements this set could do well with a niche audience.

It says right on the pack that Autographs are included.....wierd though that it doesnt say that in the write up description under the pack.

This could be really cool or completely lame. Would be nice to see a checklist prior to it coming out....

My gut says lame since the long delay. With its 2020 copyright date, this set was likely put on the backburner at a time when UD was laying off a large chunk of staff early COVID.

People on ePack will buy damn near everything. Weekly garbage, digital not quite NFTs, you name it.

My speculation above on autos is almost certainly wishful thinking. UD doesnt need to go to that length for something like this to sell on epack, as mentioned nearly anything will sell. The space sketches alone could carry a product like this, but it looks like they at least put in some creative thought for the inserts as well, which is nice.

In terms of set artist autos, not that I know that's what these autos will be... I wonder if UD is incorrectly interpreting the popularity of those from Marvel sets, where they can be pretty big chases. A lot of that is due to it being a rare 'parallel' for the set and chased by character collectors. That wouldnt be quite the same in an off-brand set like this.

I do like the set concept here. If I had creative control at UD and was going to release a Space set, pulling out all the stops, here is what I would do.

-actual scientist/astronaut autos
-space sketches
-real space 'memorabilia'....whatever that would be, small chunks of meteorite, moon rocks (I kid, I kid, although small bit of lunar meteorite is an option if price is no issue).

You almost never see a true science-oriented nonsports set, but I think there would be appetite for one among the public. Look at the popularity of Albert Einstein's random 1928 card. In mid-grade it can go for thousands. Imagine a general science oriented set with autos of scientists/popularizers...Neil DeGrasse Tyson, Dawkins, Susskind, Atkins, Coyne, Krauss, Penrose.....and almost limitless options for cut sigs of iconic scientists.

Tim Shinn shared that some of these cards are larger than 8x10.

I did 5 Packs after seeing what was hit - I'm pretty pleased. The Manual Relic is pretty darn cool.

Prices seem high at first glance but folks are pulling some nice cards. And e-Pack is a weird place where people buy anything even if most of the achievements aren’t that great.

The Universal Sketch Card achievement must be the huge sketch posted above.

Anyone spot this in the Odds? “Packs may contain cards released in previous Upper Deck products.”

So far, this looks very well done. I opened (2) boxes and am extremely happy. The price point might be slightly high...would be better at the $79.99-$99.99 range a box.

Hits
Charles Duke Appollo 16 AUTO
(2) Manuals/Instructions Relics from Apollo 16
(1) Sketch -- Joe Mangini

I saw that too...was thinking buybacks from the Goodwin and Champions or possibly signed buybacks from the Astronauts

Anyone have 4, 8, 12, 21, and 43 base cards they don't want and are not going for the achievement? If so I could use them for my base set. Let me know and we can do a trade on ePack

Really wanted an autograph…opened like 15 packs or so. Pulled 2 relics and this 5x7 sketch!

Love the space sketches!

Kudos to UD for actually getting astronaut autos in the product

Four of the printing plate achievements have already been claimed. A bunch of autos and sketches are on COMC.

I may pick up a base set and some insert sets when prices bottom out.
