Default Best way to sell lots of late 90s inserts

I'm organizing my basketball card collection to sell. Around 2500 late 90s insert cards. 2000 low value - $20 or less (of these around 150 are kobe or MJ), and about 400-500 worth $20 up to $12K (Of these, around 100 are MJ or Kobe).

So my question is, what's the best way to sell this? I was planning to sell all the low value cards as one large collection, then the low value MJs and Kobes as separate lots, then $20-$50 as a smaller collection, then the rest will probably go to consignment as singles.

I would be interested in the low value lot if you go that way. Let me know what you are thinking.

If you want to maximum the money you make, nothing beats the $20 and under eBay ESE. If you sell the cheaper cards as one large collection, be prepared to be low-balled.

Right. But I don't have time to spend selling, packaging and shipping 2000 cards one or even 10 at a time.

Sure. Still working through it. Should have some pricing after TG.

You'd be leaving a ton of money on the table imo if you instead to choose bulk sell the 2000 cards to someone. If they're $1-3 cards that's a bit different, but anything $5 and up to maximize your $ just ship in a priority box to a co-signer to maximize your money.

Even if a card sells for $10 theoretically - for most co-signers your take-home net would be around $7.00 for that sale (dc sports for example) ... For a $5 sale, take-home is $3. Surely more than you'd get from bulk selling to someone ... selling them yourself is a ton of work and stars like Kobe/Jordan usually go for a couple dollars more if listed by a big co-signer (mainly cause people buy in bulk so don't have to factor in shipping).

With all that mind if you go against my advice, I'd be interested - to then turn around do what I'm suggesting above to profit from it (saying tongue in cheek).

Very valid point. The only issue is I have read it's pointless to consign cards worth under $5. Also, do consigners even take cards that might sell for under $5? And would they take this many cards?

I'm not saying no to anything. Trying to get the most feedback I can. This helps. Thanks!

Under 5 can be tricky yes. For me, I use dc sports. With their current rates take home from $3 sale would be $1.50, $5 sale would be $3, $10 would be $7, etc.

So just gotta do the math on it on what makes sense. I sell at card shows too but co-signing can be good method to get rid of cards. I’ve found star guys - Kobe all the way to Vince Carter, iverson, Dirk tend to sell fine with co-signer. Routinely I’ve sold cards of those guys for $6-$8 through dc sports when most sales of the cards may be $3-$5 from other sellers (as an example). I’ve found football and baseball don’t seem to do as well as basketball through them too.

On the amount of cards - they definitely would. Only thing is each card does have to be in toploader with most co-signers. I’ve only sent as much as about 300 in one shipment and that went great

Great answer right here

There's a place called COMC that may end up being your best pal, my friend. I only use them for Upper Deck E-Pack cards so not sure how they are percentage wise compared to other consignors but they are where I suggest you send those cards. The best part? They will take that many cards and will also catalogue and photograph them for you, a million times more efficient than listing yourself on Ebay for example.

If I was in your situation anything over $5k estimate I'd contact one of the known consignors (Goldin, Probstein etc) and go with whatever one will get the most eyes on your cards and has the best net for you percentage wise. First part is important because I've read stories on here where a consignor has just randomly started the auction without even notifying the seller or put it against a bunch of similar competing cards which will obviously hurt sales.

$1-5K I'd try to move myself, even on here, they have to be pretty good if they are valued that high and 90's inserts are always popular so I don't think it would be a grueling process. Even if you went to one card show with the mindset to sell knowing you're saving Ebay fees and willing to work with people a little I think you'd do fine.

COMC can also be good for cards up to a few hundred, the realized prices are usually lower than Ebay though so I wouldn't stash anything crazy there, people like deals as they know people are probably also consolidating collections and looking to sell on there. Anything outside the above categories I would take your original idea, gather them up and start reaching out to the vultures on here. If you start with the big guys though and sell one of your larger cards you may not even be in as big a rush and can entertain more offers than if you start with the lower end first.

I think that's a ton of paperwork with COMC though.

Sending to dcsports or pcsports would be a good call if you don't want the work. Some will do well, others will do poorly, it'll balance out to what he wants in the end

Easiest thing would be to sell it all to me. I buy these lots a few times each year. I'll be at show in Jacksonville December 8 and the show in Philly December 13-15. Look like you're in Maryland. If you can't make it up to Philly, I'll be driving back to Florida from that show.

Looking for Andre Dawson Serial numbered cards that are his jersey number - either #8 or #10. So looking for cards like 8/8 or 08/99 or 10/250.

Thanks for all the input. So far the consensus is:

$5-$100 should go to ebay consigner (dcsports, pcsports, COMC). Everyone has different opinions on those guys so I'll research that some more. The only thing I've read so far is DCSports losing people's cards and being hard to get in touch with.

Under $5 I can still sell as a collection on here. I would take a bit of a hit on this though. But the convenience factor does have value. I will finish sorting those out then decide. Probably after TG.

Over $100 I will send to Goldin as I have had good experiences with them already. They sold my tim duncan high voltage500 and Autographics collection for way above book value so I know that's my best option for these. I am waiting for them to list my Rock Stars refractors set, dunkins and fleer tiffany set. They are hounding me relentlessly for my noyz boyz and PMGs and more of my HV500s. lol.

I think an eBay consigner is the correct answer for most of your items, including items in excess of $100. Goldin is great for higher dollar items, but the lower cost items tend to get lost in the sauce with them. I suggest finding your favorite eBay consigner and allow them to list most of it. Good luck!

What would you consider high dollar? Over $1000?

I wouldnt bother sending over $100 to Goldin. Maybe over $500-600.

Would also be interested in what you have available but yeah...basically the more work you put in, the more profit you can realize.

I will also vouch for ddearing. I've sold to him at shows in the past. Easy and fair to deal with.

Valid point. Goldin has all the big rich VIP customers who pay premium.
