Default Let's talk Kaprizov

His game appears to be similar to Panarin in that his value is in his playmaking and not giving up on the play. Very good at the "nifty little pass". I enjoy watching his short passes around the net. He is very creative in that regard and he is one of those guys that seems to make whoever he is playing with better.

Drawbacks are lack of any elite speed or deking ability. He is not flashy by any means. But very solid and appears dependable.

I wonder about his long term hobby viability as Minnesota isn't really a popular team for collectors. Surely I will catch some heat from Wild fans for that, but nobody outside Minnesota cares about the Wild. I sometimes forget they're a NHL team, honestly.

Your thoughts on him?

Minnesota is great market.
But more collectors than investors.

If Kaprizov was 19 then every investor would be drooling at him.
They ignored Panarin for a long time but eventually paid up.

But they were all paying money for Tarasenko even though he was even older and on St Louis.

What?

Tarasenko was 21 his rookie year on the Blues

Kaprizov was 23 and Panarin was 24.

But no one cared about him till 2-3 years later when he started performing.
When he was peak price he was not young.

Long-term (i.e. 5+ years) I think his most likely hobby value ceiling would be something like Panarin with a raw YG around the $50 range. Panarin's a Hart finalist, two time All-star, won a Calder, strong points totals, in a great market but moved around a bunch before that. Kaprizov's career would be a success if he could achieve the same things as Panarin by the time they're the same age.

I think his absolutely best hobby value ceiling would be Kucherov. Hart, two Cups, a dominant team in a smaller market. The Wild have some decent talent in the pipeline, especially a guy like Marco Rossi. One of the things the Wild are missing is a 1C, if Rossi can fill that role on a line with Kaprizov and Zuccarello, we might see Kaprizov take another step in terms of production. The Wild are a good team and should make the playoffs as well. Do I think the Wild win a Cup, let alone 2? No, but if they can consistently make the playoffs, Kaprizov would have the opportunity to establish himself as a playoff performer (or not).

Panarin’s Young Gun has a couple of things going against it. One is the fact that they printed a gazillion McDavid YGs that year and thus everybody else got inflated runs also that don’t get absorbed to the level McDavid does. Secondly, he’s pictured as a Blackhawk and having moved teams a couple of times it’s not quite the same when you’re not on your first team anymore. I know as a Leafs fan I’m not as enthusiastic about owning say a Tavares New York Islanders YG vs a Matthews/Marner/Nylander Leafs YG.

Kaprizov resigned in Minny so he’ll be there for a while, his YG card also looks awesome with the green Wild jersey, and he’s got the skill to be an exciting 90-100pt ceiling player for many years. It all makes for a good combination to be a collectible YG. As someone who collected Marian Gaborik in the late 2000’s I can attest to how hardcore Minnesota collectors can be lol

Lol the Gaborik Titanium /99 is still a grail card to anyone who collected back then. What a beauty set.

When I was collecting him I was after game-used and autos so I never really targeted the Titanium #/99. I was well aware of its grail-ness though. If I was still collecting him today I’d absolutely be on the hunt for one.

as much as i like Kaprizov.

he was pretty much a ghost last playoffs for minny.

I think the prices right now are too steep.

Will be waiting for a drop in prices.

Cheers

The saddest part about that whole situation is watching 2 separate guys start fights in protest of the hit and lose. Was like a triple loss, what a dirty hit though really, imo.

Hope he bounces back.

Uhh Foligno beat the piss out of the Frederic. Frederic is really lucky his face missed Marcus' fist on that last punch.

I love Kaprizov, but good play doesn't always translate to hobby value.

Nationality matters. Canadian players get far more love than anyone in the hobby. Yes a few exceptions like Ovie (but he is going to go down as one of the best players ever) Even Malkin doesn't really get much love either for what he's done.

[QUOTE=EdwardJ;17921156]I love Kaprizov, but good play doesn't always translate to hobby value.

/QUOTE]

When his YG came out it was over $300...
Mcdavid was only $200 when it came out...
Yes different markets but...

It was one of the highest initial yg prices.

Hobby hype dies down with time obviously.

Very true! he was incredibly hot out the gate when Series 2 came out. I think it was somewhat of a 'perfect storm' for him. Series 1 didn't have much to offer aside from Lafreniere and at the time he wasn't playing very well.

The hobby was as active as I've ever seen and Kap was playing really well. I think he continues to trend down and settles around the $75 marker. He's not in line to win any awards and I don't think Minnesota is in for a deep playoff run.
