My 10 year old is transitioning from Pokémon to baseball. He wants cards for Christmas. What hobby box under $100 is a fun break with potential for hitting something decent?

If it were me, I’d buy a box of 22 Heritage High and a mega box of 2021 Topps Chrome Anniversary. It’s a lot of cards and bound to have some fun pulls. Plus both offer a chance at decent autos.

Missed by a week, A&G X was the best deal of the year.
The holiday boxes are decently fun.... super long lottery odds for top autos. Not very many hobby boxes under $100.... might want to stick with pokemon |

Stadium Club is always pretty fun. There's usually two autos per box.

Start him the basics and go with: 2023 Topps Series 2 and hope for a Carroll parallel.

Pick up a team set of his favorite team too. They're usually fairly inexpensive ($10? $20?) and a lot of fun.

The cheapest boxes with a guaranteed auto that I could find from one of the Big 3 are the 2021 Optic Carolina Blue & White Megas for $25, 2021 Prizm Cosmic Haze Megas for $28 or the 2022 Donruss Pink Fireworks Megas for $30. I've opened each and would recommend each for a cheap rip, with 2022 Donruss being the most fun for me (if you're OK with unlicensed).
I like the 2021 Optic design and card feel. And while the RC class isn't great, the prospects insert set has guys like Adley and Jasson. There are also some cool looking inserts (Mythical, Unleashed) and you'll get at least a dozen shiny chromium cards and some of the autos are on card Rated Rookies that are likely #ed. And of these 3 products, you've probably got the best shot of hitting an auto of an actual major league player. I also like the 2021 Prizm design, card feel, and QC. The dozen cosmic haze parallels you'll get look great in hand. You'll also pull some beautiful looking teal wave and solid looking carolina blue prizms, plus your regular silvers. You might come out with close to 20 shiny cards (including 1 #ed hopefully) but your auto will almost certainly be a random AAAA infielder or relief pitcher with 20 MLB innings to his name but I had a blast opening a couple of these. The 2022 Donruss base card design is terrible but the base holos in every color look really sweet and the Pink Fireworks insert parallels (including Marvels and Unleashed) are gorgeous so getting a dozen of each, plus an auto ain't bad. And Elly, Jasson and Julio are in the prospects insert set. I also think Pro Debut could be great. Tons of cool minor league uniforms/wacky team names, 4 autos per hobby, a couple of shiny cards per box and some players that he can follow as they hopefully make the majors. And Topps Platinum Anniversary lite and blasters are fun, as are Topps Holiday boxes and you could get a couple of these (instead of a single TSC hobby box) and have more variety while staying in your budget. This was my first thought. Those boxes are made for this situation.

I 2nd this. Getting a bunch of future stars will be fun for him to follow for years to come. A hobby box can be had for $70 or less and you get 4 autos, plus several serial numbered cards. He will feel like he is getting hits left and right.
This is a product that is great to open and then hold onto. I found a Corbin Carroll Auto & Orange Refractor Chrome #/25 from past sets over the summer from this product, which was a nice surprise! Last edited by jdhaugh11; 10-31-2023 at 10:03 AM. |

With a $100 budget, I'd buy a flagship collection box from Costco and a 2021 Topps Chrome Anniversary Lite box. I like the Lite boxes as long as your not chasing autos since they have more cards than the Megas and you'll get a decent amount of parallels.

I like Pro Debut, but if he's 10 years old and coming over from Pokemon he's probably more interested in the big stars of the day like Judge, Ohtani, etc.

Yeah if that is the case, I would go with Big League. You can get about 3 hobby boxes for $100. Autos fall 1 in 2 boxes, plus there are decent SP cards to chase & he will find the Inserts fun.
