Default Marvel What If?

Anyone excited for this release or has all the money been spent on MM?

Yea we're all broke.

In all seriousness, being a TV show set, even an animated show, is kinda outside what I collect in marvel, so wont be buying. But the set format does look interesting, borrowing inserts from all the Marvel sets-

Base parallels (90 Marvel Universe)
Battle Spectra Gems (Marvel masterpieces)
Medallions (Fleer Ultra Avengers)
Black Diamond cards
etc

Gonna be hard to compete with MM though.

I predict BOGO on MCU cards, coming to an ePack near you.

There does seem to be more Marvel sets than collectors at the moment. All the current collector dollars seem to be gravitating toward MM and a lot of the other sets might struggle for awhile until MM sells through and people give some of these other sets a look.

Spider-man metal definitely gave a bump to MCU sets on ePack last year, and most of those sold out. The difference now is 1) All the sets hitting at once which means a glut of product and 2) Collector burnout from the insane prices spent on cards last year.

It doesn't help that MCU sets used to be $4/pack on Epack and now are $15-30/pack.

Even MM was what, $8.99/pack in 2018? I don't remember...but I know it was closer to $250/box than $900/box.

Not to mention MM used to have a sketch per box.

Reduced content and triple the price...bleh.

I actually don't like having inserts from other sets in this, but something tells me this is the only way to make it remotely attractive to collectors.

I pre ordered one box for $90 just because it was so unusually cheap for a Marvel box! I am hoping for a Spectra Gem, Black Diamond relic or Zombie Spider Man glow in the dark card myself.

I imagine the big draw for a lot of people might be the 1 per case Zombie cards. Pretty sure this is the first card issue for this IP isn't it?

I couldn’t get into the show. And can’t see an animated set taking off. Spider-Verse did decently but that’s a multimillion dollar movie franchise. These Dis+ shows never really seem to take off. They are more filler than anything. It was smart for UD to tie in the popular inserts from other sets tho… it’s just the What If series is kind of lackluster as a subject.

Maybe at a $3 a pack price point on ePack... otherwise, not so much.

Wow, almost six months without a post in this thread may be telling (it was way back on page 6!). But this hits ePack tomorrow. No word on cost. I thought this was a 'premium' set, as the inserts were based on some Black Diamond designs. But there will be digital base. Ugg.

Quote:
Marvel Studios' What If...? trading cards purchased on Upper Deck e-Pack® will feature:

6 cards per pack, 15 packs per box, 12 boxes per case

An eye-catching 50-card digital Base Set featuring the characters from the hit show

Collect premium acetate Clear Cut Chapters cards that fall once per pack, on average and re-tell each story from the series with 9 cards devoted to the 9 episodes from Season 1

Fascinating inserts sets such as Infinity Ultron, Frozen in Time, and The Watcher's Sight Lenticulars

Find at least 2 #’d parallels per box, on average

The throwback 1990 Marvel Universe cards with serial-numbered parallels such as Orange (#’d to 188), and Purple (#’d to 18)

The opportunity to complete sets to earn exciting Upper Deck e-Pack® exclusive achievement cards.

A trading card set based on the comic book version of What If could be pretty cool.

What If Wolverine had killed the Hulk?

What If Peter Parker became the Punisher?

What if Venom had possessed the Punisher?

I like the Clear Cut Chapters and I'm sure they'll be extremely cheap in the race to the bottom.

The cards are cool, but the non sport market as a whole is in fatigue with all the releases. This board used to be a lot more active years ago...now there is very little chatter about new product releases it seems..

i would need autographs to be in this product unless it's dirt cheap (which it isn't).

I agree and posted a thread here late last year expressing a similar sentiment.

https://www.blowoutforums.com/showthread.php?t=1571515

We are still making are way through much of the “glut” caused by so many Marvel sets being delayed during COVID. A weird time where everything was selling out, record secondary prices were being seen, but a ton of new sets were being delayed. Now when some of these sets arrive it is clear they are late to the party and the audience that would buy anything has largely left the hobby.

Collectors still remain though … for the “good stuff.” It’s just that now the good stuff coast a lot more and in many cases is overprinted/watered down so you can feel like a bag holder if you don’t hit big on a high priced box.

It’s moving lower in price (physical). Get close to $50 a box and I’m buying.
