Default the 2023 National - post the "one that got away"

ok, maybe this thread will be therapeutic:

on wednesday, i saw a GORGEOUS 1948 leaf, joe dimaggio.

it was "only" a psa 1, b/c of BACK wrinkle/creasing (did not go through to the front)

LOOKED like a 5. great corners, great centering, color "popped".

asking $ 1,400 came down to $ 1,200. i offered $ 1,000, came up to $ 1,100.

it was a "2" price, and i LOVE these type of cards, i have no problem paying
"up" for these.

i have been hunting for a 2nd dimaggio. (have the iconic 41 playball)

i had saved up $ 1,700 for the national (already bought a $400 '48 leaf
rookie warren spahn) and was nervous about spending my whole wad that
early.

went home , slept on it, decided that WAS the card i HAD to have.

got in early the next morning with my dealer badge, card was sold. of course.

I saw a Nikola Jovic cracked ice horizontal (variation?) auto on Thursday. I said I’d go back and get it Friday. Gone.

Framed 16x20 Justin Jefferson highlight photo signed in yellow paint pen. Same thing, I saw it Wednesday night and at 9:35 the next morning it was gone.

I the one I didn't see, I figured at least the east coast dealers would have plenty of Jordan Westburg cards to pick from but I only saw one (that was overpriced/had no eye appeal).

I had a few close calls with cards but watching some of the "advice" content on YouTube had me circling back within a couple of minutes. I did go $500 over budget so I am currently in the doghouse with my wife.

Posted a pic in my write up thread, but a Ty Cobb PSA 8 graded signed check, green ink.

I couldn't have gone back more than two hours later and it was gone

Bill Walton Upper Deck Auto with Grateful Red inscription. Never seen it and a guy came to my table and I saw it after looking over his case to buy. He would not sell it, no idea of a value but tried everything. Can't find another one. I also missed a 2003 Lebron Pristine Refractor Gold /99 to finish my rainbow.

Why have a card out if you’re not selling it?!

Incredibly pretty middle-aged woman bought me a drink at a bar but I didn't seal the deal.

That stunk.

He handed me his whole case to look through to buy but as soon as I saw that one he said no. I even tucked it to the side and while I was looking through the rest he grabbed it and put it back. I gave him my whole Walton story and now that I have seen it I can't forget!

Perhaps another reason is that he just acquired it himself.

I saw a Michael Harris 1988 black auto on Thursday at the very first table after getting off the general admission escalators.

Friday I went ot the dealer and it was sold. Should have nabbed it!

A life lesson i learned at my first national was, if you see something that is close to where it should be in price you need to just grab it as you will regret it

NEVER walk away from a card at the National that you're going to be upset about not getting the next day.

the hesitation came in that i had saved months to come up with "$1,700"
and was i being "to hasty" b/c lets face it, you have tens of thousands of "choices". (at the national)

that being said, maybe others can relate, that card "spoke to me", in a sense, call it the strongest of gut feelings, and i have never gone wrong when feeling that type of "conviction".

it was a "unicorn" in the sense that it had the eye appeal of a card 3 grades higher.

i just looked up the infamous '48 leaf ted williams sgc 2 that somebody paid
a 7 price for.

would i ever do that, NO, but , it does show an (extreme) point of view i'm trying to get across.

This. I saw #1 on my want list within the first 10 booths I visited. I left it to go walk the floor and didn't see another and almost ran back to get it. It was there, thankfully, but I would have been a wreck if someone else had snagged it...
