That has to be one of the strangest cross promotions I've ever seen. Who is going to buy a dozen boxes of hair dye in the hopes of collecting the entire set of cards? Nobody dyes their hair that much, right? I've added it to the list, thanks.

Yeah… it is a weird one but I guess they were going for the Harley Quinn fan base. I think one of the strangest in recent years was the Hanes Underwear Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 set that had a HUGE checklist and something like 5 cards a pack with parallels and super rare auto cards (including Stan Lee).

Not unusual at all, at least to those of us who collect Baseball.

Fruit of the Loom in 1993 teamed with Fleer.
Milkbone Dog Biscuits team with Upper Deck in 1993
Kraft Cheese had several sets between 1993-1995
Mr. Turkey sandwich meats had a set in 1992
Jimmy Dean had sets betwen 1990-1995
Cracker Jacks had multiple sets in a 20 year span
Mootown Cheese snacks in 1992
Proctor & Gamble in 1992
Ralston Purina Dog Food in 1984
Even Wonderbread had a couple.

The point is, I actually wish more non-sport sets would venture out in to the "weird". I'm a fan of weird and unusual sets because they tend to use photo's not seen in your regular sets. The Milkbone set showed the ballplayers with their dogs. Cool stuff.

I've been collecting the Hanes/Walmart GOTG Vol. 2 promo set for the past year or so. The packs that came with Hanes underwear had four cards and a VUDU code card. Walmart also packaged 5-card packs with exclusive GOTG Vol. 2 DVD/Blu-ray combo sets.

Anyway, after spending way too much money I have almost the entire base set, most of the three insert sets, and maybe half the two parallel sets. No sign of any of the memorabilia cards or the auto cards. The most mindboggling thing is that Walmart had a completely separate exclusive GOTG Vol. 2 retail set. That's three total sets for the movie counting the hobby set.

I love weird promotional sets, too.

Here are some examples of the Splat "Suicide Squad" cards.

I bought 2 bottles and got a dupe of the Amanda Waller.

As for the Hanes "GoTG", I bought 4 packages (t-shirts & boxer briefs, TMI?) to get the cards.
Here's what they yielded:

Retail blaster boxes of 2021 Upper Deck Space Jam: A New Legacy trading cards are out. I've added them to the list in the first post. Blaster boxes contain 5 packs of 6 cards each. There are two retail exclusives: a Ready to Jam insert set and a Neon Blue Parallel base set.

Upper Deck is selling these for $24.99 with a limit of two per household. I don't see these at Blowout but its competitors have them priced at $39.95. I can't find listings at Target or Walmart but Walmart has a third party seller offering boxes for $42.99.

According to Cardboard Connection, hobby boxes don't go on sale until February 9, 2022.

Wasn't there also a Star Wars/Little Debbies (Cosmic Cakes iirc) promotion a couple of years ago?

If you go back far enough, Wonder Bread had both Star Wars and Close Encounters. I ate a lot of Wonder Bread as a kid

LeBron in the Tune Squad uniform is easily the best auto card he's ever done

I'm jealous, I never got any name brand stuff. My mom took us to the Nickels Bakery Thrift Store to get super cheap generic bread and knock off snack cakes. We also went to Aldi and Kroger each week to buy their respective generics.

Back in the cave-people era when I was a kid, my mom took me to the Wonder/Hostess thrift shop here in Seattle. Fruit pies 5/$1 Yes Please!!

Those were the days. There is no more Wonder/Hostess thrift shop in Seattle.

5/$1.00 would have been expensive compared to Nickels pricing, LOL. I think we paid 10 cents for a 4-pack of generic Twinkies. We were too poor for McDonalds, we went to Scotty's, where the burgers were similar but about 10 cents cheaper. We also got them plain without cheese because a cheeseburger was 35 cents while a hamburger was 25 cents. We'd take them home and put the cheese on there ourselves. Generic Kroger brand processed cheese...no Kraft for us.

Getting back on topic, Fortnite Series 3 is coming soon.

Default Non-Sports Retail Releases

I popped in to Walmart today on a whim after getting my hair cut and saw two Space Jam: A New Legacy blaster boxes on a shelf in the collectibles aisle. This may be the first non-sports I've seen in the wild since Star Wars The Mandalorian: Journey of the Child last year.

To be fair, I rarely go to Walmart or Target. Maybe three times this year total.

Walmart.com has mini blasters (five packs) of Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker trading cards in stock at $10.48 apiece:

https://www.walmart.com/ip/Star-Wars...ards/680060998

The listing clearly states "Sold and shipped by Walmart.com" so I guess someone found a case of these in a storeroom somewhere.

I stopped by the closest Walmart to me this morning thinking maybe whoever stocks the trading cards had random stuff to put out at the end of the year. Fully 1/3 of the collectibles aisle is now beef jerky. Everything else was a mix of Magic: The Gathering and Yu-Gi-Oh. And one discounted Star Wars: Rogue One Series 1 fat pack.

Bumping this back up for 2022. I've updated the first post with information about retail releases for Fortnite Series 3, Star Wars Bounty Hunters, Garbage Pail Kids, and more.

Parkside Squishmallows Series 1 have been released in retail stores (seen them in Target and Walmart), just loose packs from hobby boxes. I've seen eBay listings for hanger boxes too, which seem to just be one pack in a hanger box.

There's an active Kickstarter campaign for a Mark Spears Monsters Halloween Edition Trading Card Series, which says

Quote:
These cards will be on sale at Amazon and Walmart as well as certain retail outlets who chose to carry them this Halloween. If you are a store who wishes to carry them, contact me for wholesale inquires.
I didn't see anything about retail exclusives in the campaign.

If food issues count, there's a supplemented kids' fruit purée called Fruit Friends with box panel cards from Frozen, Minions, Spider-Man, Toy Story and Jurassic World out in Walmart now.

Also there were boxes of Eggo Waffles with Mandalorian card panels at some point, but I've only seen them stocked once.

This week we should see Garbage Pail Kids Chrome hit stores.

Marvel Metal Universe Spider-Man is supposed to also have a retail release at Wal-Mart and Target. But no word on if it will hit this week like hobby or if it hits later. First Marvel retail release in ages.

I saw GPK Chrome blasters and GPK Book Worms mega boxes at Walmart last week. Spider-Man Metal Universe blasters were up at Target.com earlier today and already sold out.

I've added 2022 Topps Star Wars The Book of Boba Fett blaster boxes to the list. The set is scheduled for release on 12/9/2022.

It's rough out there for non-sports retail. The collectibles aisle at the Walmart closest to me is restocked weekly. I stopped by this morning and there are tons of basketball, football, baseball, and soccer cards plus plenty of Magic: The Gathering, Pokémon, and Digimon cards. All I saw for non-sports was one GPK Chrome blaster and one GPK Book Worms mega box. I don't know if Spider-Man Metal blasters were ever stocked.
