Default Sean Payton is walking away (per Rapoport)

Ian Rapoport is reporting Sean Payton is walking away, and apparantly there is a rumor of him taking a job with FOX.

Kind of a shocker to me to see his long run with the Saints end so abrubtly, but Payton has put together one heck of a career IMO

He and Drew Brees had a hell of a run together. Despite the fact that my Colts lost to the Saints in the Super Bowl, I have nothing but respect for Sean Payton. He was a terrific coach.

I generally liked Payton, although the Minneapolis Miracle was that much sweeter, because he was mockingly doing the Skol chant on the sidelines shortly before Diggs' catch.

But the Skol chant is embarrassing and stupid, so I'm not going to hold that against him too much.

He will never have to pay for a drink in the state of Louisiana again, and he leaves that franchise better than how he found it.

I wonder if someone put a bounty on his head recently and he has to walk away?

He certainly liked to do that to many opposing players in his time with the Saints.

Yeah I'm not a fan.

He's a dickhead.

I hate to admit it, but I completely forgot that happened under his watch. Definitely a black eye on his resume for sure.

Williams was the DC, but Payton was the HC at the time. I'd find it hard to believe Payton knew nothing about it.

Everyone knew about it. Just saying it was Greg that started it.

QB is what makes the team not the coach. I'm pretty sure Arian wouldn't be a Super Bowl champ, if not for some guy who could be a dad to many current NFL players.

My guess is that he sits out until his "dream job" becomes available.

Let McCarthy have one year and then go to Dallas?

McCarthy should already have been fired.

He grew up in Illinois. Actually went to High School right down the street from where I live now.

He played for Eastern Illinois, and was a scab player on the Bears.

If the Bears don't make a play for him, they are crazy. He needs a fresh start, and can come home again and help mold Fields.

The Bears send off a 6th round pick to the Saints, like what the Bucs gave the Cards when they hired Arians out of retirement.

Interestingly enough, McCarthy and Payton were the two finalists for the Packers job in 2006.

I can't imagine a less desirable job than taking over a roster without a QB that needs to shed $70 million in cap room in six weeks.

Why would Trubisky come with Sean Payton? I floated the idea, if the Bears signed Dabol as HC, being the one that recruited Mitch to Buffalo to begin with, he might bring Mitch with him.

But where is your Mitch and Payton connection?

I would be very surprised, but not totally shocked if in the next month McCarthy is fired, and the Saints trade Payton's rights to the Cowboys, and he does indeed coach next season.

If this is it, he's done right by the Saints and the City of N. Orleans.

So is that 9 or 10 coaching positions open right now? Almost 1/3 of the league at this point. I can see Payton not wanting to do go through a complete rebuild for the Saints. They have tight cap space and no QB. They will be dumping more higher paid veterans and starting over for the most part.

Will it be Musical chairs? or will we see new blood.

Hope for the later and the hilarity it brings.

As a Bucs fan I'll be happy when he's gone. Not a fan of his.

Good coach, but a real jerk

9 teams will now have new coaches for next year plus the ones the last few years who've changed. Everyone wants to buy boxes and chase rookies and other young stars, but the amount of turnover is just nuts even on functioning franchises.

How many more jobs suddenly become available and tons of $$$ is thrown at Payton?

Does he have to be out a full year?

Dallas seems like the perfect fit.

Dianna Russini just announced Sean Payton will go to the Dallas Cowboys.

He wants to work for an owner like Al Davis or Jerry Jones..... well... the first one is not likely to happen.

So FOX for a year.... Cowboys in 2023?

Makes sense. It was reported Payton nearly joined Dallas in 2019.
