I have been looking at the GEM rates for 1988-89 O-Pee-Chee and it seems that the rates for the key cards are much lower than the other cards. For example, there are only 39 PSA 10s for the Gretzky card versus 439 PSA 9s and 61 PSA 10s compared to 817 PSA 9s for the Hull. However there are 3386 PSA 10s in the set compared to 5126 PSA 9s.
It is hard to compare the difference between the 9s and 10s when looking at the cards. I used to think it was back centering, but there are a lot of 10s with poor back centering for both the key cards and the commons. The only plausible answer I could think of is that companies like 4sharpcorners are big on submitting common cards and they were rumoured to only slab the 10s and pay less for the 9s not slabbed. Even so it still doesn't explain why the Steve Yzerman card would have 47 PSA 10s compared to 140 PSA 10s or why the Ray Bourque would have 49 PSA 10s compared to 26 PSA 9s. I don't think they would have submitted 1000 of each of these cards to check for the 10s. Is this population control? |
