Default What grade would you give this card?

Based on the pictures what grade would this card most likely receive? Thanks for looking.

I don't know, maybe an 8.5? Border chipping on the left side and white on the top two corners.

No way that is a 7. I understand you are seeing a white corner and minor chipping, but the card is blown up by like 7x or 10x. Look at your cards under 10x magnification, and you are going to see a lot of issues, many of which won't affect the final grade.

Depends on how it looks to the naked eye, but I would expect a 9 with an outside chance at a 10 if it looks good to the naked eye.

800 dpi resolution (whatever that means)

How's the lower right corner? Can't tell, overexposed bright white, so I don't know if I'm seeing a slight bump. The view from the reverse side makes it look like the edge isn't straight near the tip of the corner.

Top 2 corners look OK, but have to check them on an angle under bright light. Sometimes a dinged corner passes the test under magnification when still in a sleeve/top loader, and this flat scan is like that.

This card passes phase 1: would I remove it from a sleeve for further inspection? Yes. Will it gem based on what is shown? Unknowable.

All great points. Thank you.

Card is not in a sleeve in the above scans.

Phase 1 for me is looking at the card under heavy light to check for dinged corners, obvious defects, etc. Eliminates unnecessary scanning.

Phase 2 is magnification, front top, front bottom, then back top and back bottom. Then the corners only if needed.

Appreciate the input.

Hearing, reading, and my own recent grading experiences say there’s a better chance this receives a PSA 8 instead of a PSA 9... 1 year ago I’d have said PSA 9 9 out of 10 times, and a PSA 10 if you got lucky with the right grader. PSA has tightened their grading standards this year and they aren’t handing out 10’s willy-nilly anymore, especially with paper stock.

I only look at mine with 10x magnification. Am I doing it wrong?

Without having the card in hand to see the surface, I wouldn't put forth an opinion.
In my experience, the surface has issues as often as corners do, especially in "fresh from the pack" cards.

Agreed. I like the eBay sellers who get mad when I ask questions about the surface. They respond with the good ol’ “pack to top loader”. Which tells me NOTHING.

Some NM-MT'ish cards I've sold raw recently, with these pictures used in my listings to show the damage. All of this more or less disappears when photographed straight on. I won't send low-end cards for grading with anything close to this. These are worse than most when it comes to surface damage, but they were easy to photograph and show.

"pack fresh" surface dimple on the back (just got positive feedback on this one today, as a matter of fact)

"straight to top loader" surface dents:

scratch marks near the topps logo:

The Tatis was a Walgreens yellow parallel I would have sent for grading..but it was unlikely to gem with that dimple. That card is pop 1 in PSA-10 right now, so probably worth quite a bit more in a PSA-10 holder than the $14 I sold it for.

Sending cards like that hoping for a '10' is how you get back an order with a low gem rate. My first few submissions, I sent borderline cards to learn what gets accepted. Take notes and try to learn from prior efforts and you should get better over time.

Absolutely 100% correct. If I see anything wrong with a card I do not submit for grading.

PSA 8 at best. If you only had one white corner, it could possibly get a 9 as long as the edges and surface was ok.

I'd guess 8 and need to look at it closer.

Good Morning All,

Does anyone know if graders are required to perform any of their functions with the use of a magnification device,.... or is it optional.

Thank you.
