Default Agree/Disagree?

Let's say that 3 years into a marriage you discover that your spouse has nearly $100k in credit card debt that s/he never told you about. Upon confronting your spouse about why that information was not disclosed, s/he replies that if you were interested in those kinds of details before marriage you were not serious about getting married in the first place and that marriage is a package deal.

Do you agree or disagree with the indebted spouse's take on the situation?

Try to get back some of the stuff she bought with the card for the other guy.
Maybe you can still return it.

How do you not go over each other’s finances before you get married?

She probably kept it from him. It’s not like you get a credit check done.

I have no idea how much my wife makes until tax season rolls around and we go over income. I did know before marriage she was not in debt, which is a pre-requisite before marrying.

I take care of my money and I expect my wife to do the same.

I don't trust someone that has over 5k in CC debt. Over 100k? That is someone who always has to buy something constantly and needs the "new thing" right now, then doesn't even appreciate it once the purchase is made. Pure impulse buyer. Hard pass for me.

it’s partially that, and partially predatory credit offers/increases.

You forgot to add, Is the spouse paying it off themselves? If yes, no big deal.

not necessarily, what if the debt is student loan debt? or medical bills? That is way more likely than an impulse buyer into the 10's of thousands owed

What moron would pay their student loan with a CC?

So he paid his debt on like 75 credit cards? That’s a choice I suppose
