Default Worst years for Vintage cardboard stock?

I'm a big stickler for surface integrity and I'm curious what people's takes are on card stock, particularly post WWII, from 1948 to 1980 or so. I'm curious how card stock has changed over the years during that timeframe, particularly with Topps cards.

I have no scientific evidence to back this, but it feels like 1975 and 1976 Topps had really poor quality. I see more bubbling and veining in these cards than other years. It's almost as if that top layer wasn't pressed on tight enough.
I'm wondering if there's anything to back that up. Thanks.

1974-77 Topps Basketball. The best phrasing I can come up with is a "soft" top layer on the cards that makes them prone to chipping and tearing.

Yes!!! With 1974 and 1975 Topps basketball being the absolute worst of all. I used to think the PSA pops on those were low because no one bothered to submit, but I've found there just aren't many out there that are PSA worthy.

It seems to me that 57 topps baseball always has surface issues.
