Default Is Trevor Lawrence overrated?

first of all, being transparent, i am a fan of Trevor Lawrence.

that being said, i've got friends, who weren't/aren't. mostly because they favored another SEC school (no, not Bama), and they just like to play Devil's Advocate all the time.

but sometimes i guess, they get you really thinking too.

i think anybody who has followed the game, heard about TL coming out of high school as the best prospect in the country (similar to what Arch Manning is going through). when they won the National Title in 2018, it took Trevor to a whole new level. in 2019, they lost to a once in a lifetime team in LSU, and in 2020, Clemson and TL lost to an all-time Sugar Bowl performance from Justin Fields.

everybody touted TL as the #1 pick, and probably one of the safest first overall picks in draft history. a sure fired star, a franchise quarterback, and NFL ready with the likes of guys like Aikman, Manning, Vick, Ryan, and Luck to name a few QBs.

but is TL really that good? because when you really breakdown his college career, my goodness was Clemson absolutely loaded. (Etienne, Renfrow, Amari Rodgers, Tee Higgins, Isiah Simmons, AJ Terrell, Clelin Ferrell, Wilkins, Dexter Lawrence, etc)

i remember one game against Syracuse, where Lawrence threw a bubble screen or something, and i think it was Rodgers that took it to the house, 80 yards or something. and while the announcers gushed over TL, you're also looking at the play and saying "it's a 5 yard pass, relax. Rodgers and the rest of the guys did all the work".

so i go back to my question, is TL overrated? i haven't put in a single dollar on him, mostly because even though i do like him, i have my doubts. Jacksonville isn't Clemson, and the NFL doesn't have the ACC (unless you want to count the NFC East). people are putting so much $$$ into TL, and i just don't see it as a very wise investment. if you like Trevor or are a Jags fan, or collect Clemson, then go for it, but if you're a flipper, idk, good luck i guess.

i think Mac Jones, Fields, and Trey Lance have a higher ceiling than Lawrence.
anybody else feel like that or is it just me?

Feel like he gets a pass after having such a chaotic first year with Urban. I don’t care what he did in college. Show me in the pros what you can do. New coach and system in year two so it’s like his rookie season all over again.

Nope.

He just got into a really bad situation.

I wouldn’t be surprised to see the Jags make some noise this year.

No, as others mentioned it's a mulligan season since the spelunker Urbs was horrifically unqualified.

In that context, a little overrated. I remember those guys being lock and load, start negotiating a contract before the draft types. The others possibly too but I don't recall.

I like to give a QB at least two full seasons before I start jumping off the bandwagon. Peyton Manning looked like dung at times during his rookie season.

He's clearly talented. But I think the NFL is unique in that some franchises just don't pair QB talent with WR talent and/or coaching to get the production.

Think of the Cleveland Browns. No matter how talented a player is....if he's a Brown. He's a Brown.

I think MLB is different because its more individual. A Guy can hit .300 with 35 HR while his team loses 95 games

#1 draft choices are always going to get all the hype and are expected to live up to it.
I’m giving him a pass for last year and starting from scratch.

Score : Incomplete.

Just have a feeling though he is more suited to the college game.

3739 yds, 26 TDs, 28 Int, 56.7 Cmp%

3641 yds, 12 TDs, 17 Int, 59.6 Cmp %

It's too early to tell.

i only listed the 1st round QB picks that i recall being NFL ready. i didn't want to expand on those picks, just keep it simple. both Mannings were ready. Matt Ryan was ready. Luck, Bledsoe, and Stafford were guys that were NFL ready from the get go.

i'd put Derek Carr and Drew Brees on this list, but just wanted 1st round QB picks only.

This is exactly what I was going to say. I am not a football expert, but looking at the stats, it looks like Peyton and Trevor were kinda' similar in their rookie seasons. Peyton did improve greatly during his second season though. Let's just see what Trevor does this season.

If you look at how players like Tom Brady and Steve Young as quick examples, rode on the bench a while, learned the pro game and became elite... I think that's what's missing from the game today and fan's (especially card collectors" lack of patience as well as no real development league) lack of patience and immediate gratification expectations.

I think Trevor should be a good QB and just needs less pressure and more training. The Jags seem to always have decent players with potential that never realize it, but hopefully the players sync up and gel.

He seems like a charming clean cut kid which the league needs as a role model for the game along with some of the other law abiding players.

If we graded Josh Allen rookie season he would have gotten a "D"

i think the point is being missed in a lot of these responses.

nobody is saying he's a bust or anything. nobody is hating on him. it's a question that dates back to his college days, and i think it's a fair question.

when you see the talent that he was surrounded with, you're almost inclined to ask it. we ask that same question when it comes to Alabama QBs for example, so why not Trevor Lawrence?

i think long term, he could end up being like Tim Couch, a very good QB but maybe long term, not the best of the bunch because of the situation he's in. compare it to say Trey Lance or Mac Jones. if we're talking about the 99' class, then those guys might be more comparable to Culpepper and McNabb, being in good situations.

Way too early to tell imo. Should have a much better idea after this season.

Different time. Much more pass happy and friendly these days. Compare him to guys in his era like Herbert or Kyler.

He was thoroughly unimpressive last year. We'll see this year if he can improve. With such a so-called "generational" talent, he should look better

TLaw is the most talented QB I ever watched in high school. He was unreal. Then he was great at Clemson. I expect him to have an amazing career in the NFL, but he needs weapons around him. I do think he can do a lot with what he has, but to become a championship level QB in the NFL he is going to need a good OLine and WR/TE. I think you invest now and see a huge return in 4-5 years. I never hold anyone this long, but I will hold all my TLaws, Lance and Macs.
