Default What do I do with 1,000's of 90s commons?

So I'm new to the blowout boards, if this has been posted elsewhere I apologize.

I was going through my thousands of early 1990s basketball/baseball and football cards recently, mostly hoping to find a hidden gem. Realizing most of these are simply commons I want to get rid of them. What do you recommend I do with them? Is it as simple as throwing them in the recycling bin (just doesn't seem right) or will a local shop take them? Thoughts?

Thanks!

unfortunately, as much as i hate to say it, dumpster is probably best answer, or a nice little campfire.

local shop - if they have been around a while, they probably already have more commons than they know what to do with.

donate to hospital / local kids / etc. - many places (not all though) are no longer accepting donations like this.

You can try to donate them to charity, I think some guys with crazy card counts on here have done that before. You got any bball/football/ken griffey jr collector's choice, ud, fleer?

That's a bummer, but understandable, I guess card collecting isn't too hot with the kids these days. I actually threw out a ton of stars / semi-stars cards a couple years back because I couldn't get any one on these forums to take them for free.

Yes I have all of those scattered around. I have about 10 large moving cardboard boxes full of random cards. I'll pull out anything of value.

Ugh, the recycling bin doesn't seem right but I do see that there is not value in these. Perhaps a ceremony will be in order prior to me tossing these out, might make me feel better about throwing away hundreds of hours from my childhood.

I was in the same boat, I tried a bonfire but that didn't work out so well so I just put them all in the dumpster.

Kids don't want cards unless they know who it is and usually that's only the star players

When we had our yard sale I sold all of mine for $20 bucks. I had around 15,000 commons.

I've given some away.. Sold a few "star" lots on craigslist that were sorted by player for a few bucks and before I got my gas fire pit, I used them for kindling.

Hi Doc Spain. If only you lived in Utah.... You could take them to your local card store, and then sell them on the bid board for a few bucks. But you probably don't live in Utah.

However, if you have a ripped up MJ rookie available, you should probably not put that up on the bid board. You should let me sell that for you

I hand out cards for Halloween. I put about 20 cards in graded card bags. I organize them by team or at least city. The kids went crazy for them last year. Girls loved them just as much as guys, so my wife really liked seeing girls get excited for sports cards. It doesn't get rid of mass quantities, but it is a nice way to feel like your commons are going to a good place.

I've come across several traders over the years who are willing to do team trading, perhaps like The Admiral. Sadly, I've lost track of many of them by now, and increased postage fees may have squeezed out much of their breed, but if you're willing to take the time to sort through what you have and also have a team or a fairly large list of semistar/common players you'd prefer to have in bulk rather than whatever you've got, it might be worth throwing out a one-man's-trash-another-man's-treasure solicitation on one of the boards. I, for instance, would potentially be interested in a semistars-for-semistars kind of swap if we could get together a big enough deal to justify shipping costs in bulk. PM me if interested!

If you post on craigslist as "free", I'm sure several people will contact you for it.

I gave away and donated tens of thousands several years ago... made a small dent in my PC... Then I filled up my recycling bin so they could become something new... I accidentally tossed out some decent parallels and inserts from back in the day but the closet space I got back was worth it...
Sorry for the blurry pics, but it was mostly a ton of 80's and early to mid 90's cards... still have quite a bit that I'll eventually do the same with... it's not even worth it to give away as shipping costs have risen so much... oh well!
