Jewcer, I think the Gretzky was used because it showed numerical card conditions from 10 all the way down to 1 (if I remember correctly, so maybe it was PSA). Obviously, there are different grading expectations between modern and vintage cards. The guide didn't show the subtleties between a 9 and a 9.5, it was more broad covering the larger spectrum of grading.

Dammit, I wish I could find that article... I can't remember if it was on a grader's site or someplace like Cardboard Connection...
