Miami had two good chances, one in the 50th minute, which Messi skied off a nice pass from Suarez, and another in the 60th minute, when Allende shockingly shot wide. But that was about it. The Sounders did a great job clogging the middle of the pitch and denying Messi space, and used their speed to expose Miami's old and slow defense and general lack of quality wingers.
The Sounders started 9 homegrown players (thanks to injuries/suspensions to four normal starters), and they had much more energy than Miami's old stars. Captain Cristian Roldan was the oldest Sounder on the pitch, and he just turned 30.
Brian Schmetzer is the best American coach alive, and it's a bit shocking that he's never gotten serious consideration for the USMNT job. He created a perfect game plan, and his players executed it flawlessly.
