I often wonder about supercollecting in the 2020s with the parallels explosion. I recently bought a 2021 Optic parallel for Anthony Rizzo, from the 50¢ box, just because of being intrigued by the parallel pattern. Not a product or player I collect though I do have a single page of my favorite 9 Rizzo cards. I just wanted to see what the name of the parallel was.
Along the way I discovered that Optic had 34 “different” parallels that year.
Meanwhile, just on a casual COMC search of year 2021 Anthony Rizzo cards, I discovered there were 542 “different” cards of him that year, with surely a few dozen more (1/1s mostly) that had never been submitted to COMC.
550 cards. 1 player. 1 year.
Could even SuperMan achieve that? That means obtaining > 10 “different” cards per week, every week. And you had better hurry because there will be hundreds & hundreds more, next year.
Now imagine the concept of “super” collecting Ohtani. I figure someone(s) are trying just that. The raw quantity of cards involved just boggles my mind.
