It's actually BS that BGS got to the point of charging for that item when at first it was something given as part of the process which added great transparency. There are a lot of cards that hit PSA and leave with underwhelming grades compared to how they actually look.
The value put on technical grading is absolutely insanity, but it is where the hobby is right now. There are also inexperienced graders for vintage that make mistakes. I handle a lot of raw vintage and there are issues with almost all of the card stock when you inspect cards. What is a natural bump or valley on the card stock, could be interpreted as an indent or serious surface issue by a new grader.

I am taking a little bit of a break from grading unless I receive a card that is truly special that I want a nice frame for. I am going to be selling most of my graded collection this year and move into more expensive lower grade vintage that presents well. I would much rather have a T206 HOF in a PSA/SGC 3 that is $1000 and still worth $1000 if I crack it out of the slab than having my PSA 10 1988 Fleer Rodman that is worth $1700 in the slab and then worth $40 raw after I crack it out.
