I see gambling as contributing to both—on one hand more viewers are checking in on MAC games and getting their fix and on the other hand people are growing increasingly frustrated with underdogs who spoil their parlays. They want consistent performances to make their wagers easier.
I don’t think the average fan is fully aware of the game of tug-o-war they are caught in.

They should have kept the conferences as is for all non-football sports
Zero reason Cal Baseball should be flying across the country for a conference series against UNC. Cannot be profitable and brutal for the actual student athletes.
Figuring out TV deals would have been difficult... someone smarter than I am would have to make that work
