It doesn't explain his shooting percentage (which I hope will continue to get better), but you've got to remember that most of his first two seasons, Johnnie spent down the lineup with Benn. This season, he's played mostly on the "top" line with Hintz and Robo so he's playing against tougher matchups. Also, not only did Johnnie miss most of the preseason, Robo missed all preseason with foot surgery so he couldn't even skate. That line is just now starting to develop some chemistry. Keep an eye on Johnnie's stats over the next six weeks and I think you'll be very surprised. The kid's skill is great, but his hockey IQ is amazing.
