I think the last part of your post is especially accurate.
I have no doubt in my mind that if Collector's didn't purchase SGC, that SGC would be doing in-person grading at the National like they did last year. I hear they did quite well at the National last year.
That said, if there are less influencers pumping SGC, I don't see that as a bad thing. I personally won't grade vintage with PSA anymore due to the wildly unpredictable grades, and if SGC "matures" and becomes the go-to grading company for vintage, with fewer "influencers" pumping Wembanyama cards, I'm okay with that.
My pipe dream would be for SGC to partner or have ties with PSA somehow to start accepting "PSA/DNA" style submissions for in-person autos again, verified in SGC slabs. If they did that, as a collector that would be a dream come true, as I still use PSA/DNA for vintage on-card autos, but man, it currently takes 2+ months in "Research & ID" stage, and it comes back in a PSA slab. Argh. If SGC could offer that service, I would be completely done with PSA for all things vintage.
