Well if the person you're showing it to had any knowledge at all, they're probably familiar with the fact that most rookie cards during this period had at least one season of stats from a major professional sports team. The 101 doesn't have this, it shows only his college stats. So how would you explain that?
If we're going to be accurate, and we're looking at just the back of the card, the 1985-86 #117 would be his true "rookie" card. It's my understanding that this set is easier to counterfeit than the 101 set. I don't see any PSA graded 117's, so I'm assuming PSA still doesn't grade these.
Just for comparison sake, the 1984 Topps Traded Dwight Gooden shows only minor league stats and is considered an XRC. His 1985 Topps card shows his first season with the Mets, and is considered his true rookie card. So using this logic we're forced to conclude once again that the 101 is still just an XRC.
I guess you should now invest heavily in the 117, and convince whoever you can that it's his true rookie card.
