Ok, but then can we consider current times open to those peaks? I mean, Mattingly's prices are peaking again, aren't they. Didn't the entire hobby just peak again? And prices for Donnie's 84 RCs are rather high, still, way stronger than Jose's rookies. Shoot, his 1984 Topps Tiffany is a 5-figure card.
Regarding the age of respondents, my guesstimate is that you would have to be about 45-55+ to remember the madness over Donnie's rookies in the late 1980s, whereas you could be 30-40 and remember the Jose madness.
I chose Mattingly just because he was the forerunner. Another poster mentioned Joe Charboneau from 1981 Topps, which is true, but nowhere near the scale and madness and prices of Mattingly.
Mattingly was the godfather or the pioneer of rookie cards. Really, it's true.
