I collect both modern and vintage. I don't tie up all my money in one player. Oh yeah, I also collect what I want, without "investing" on my mind. If I were to pick up five cards before it's too late, my list would look something like this:

(All PSA Graded)

-1939 Play Ball Ted Williams RC
-1951 Bowman Willie Mays RC
-1954 Topps Hank Aaron RC
-1979 Topps / O-Pee-Chee Wayne Gretzky RC (I know they've gone up A LOT)
-1986 Fleer Michael Jordan RC

I would buy the best looking card I could get within a reasonable price range, depending on the grade. I have all the cards I listed except the Hank Aaron RC. I will pick one up someday, and it will cost a lot more than if I were to purchase it right now.

I say buy what you want, like Mook Man, Ron-Bone, Juanny Baseball, LeBron, Golden Boy Brady, The Fish, etc... there are many ways that are just fine in purchasing sports cards. Just my opinion.
