One of the major historical associations is having their annual convention this week. I tuned in to a paper presentation yesterday and listened to a historian give a run down of William Jennings Bryan. Most people only remember Bryan as the great conservative defender of fundamentalism (ie. the “Scopes Monkey Trial”) but in reality he was one of the most politically progressive candidates out there and his own biographer described him as the “father of the modern Democratic Party that FDR inherited.”
Basically most of US history serves as an inconvenient truth for our present polarized politics.
