There is opportunity there, but man, the challenge is huge.
Step one is accepting that nothing happens overnight. There has been massive progress made with all of these types of issues over the past however many years. Crime is way down. Police shootings are way down. Let’s acknowledge progress and continue to try for better.

I think community involvement is important. There’s a high level of distrust for the police in high crime areas. It’s a two way street, though. Cops aren’t just showing up to break up picnics in the park and shooting people for choosing mayo over mustard.

For those who have problems with cops, stop committing crime, stop harassing cops, stop shooting cops. Work with the police on crimes that affect your community instead of doing nothing. Often times there’s information that isn’t shared with the cops due to some sort of street code.

For cops, stop being physical when it isn’t needed. Call out the bad cops. F the brotherhood thing... your duty is to protect and serve the public, not your crooked fellow police officers just because they wear a badge too. Build trust with every civilian interaction.

As far as reform, qualified immunity shouldn’t be a thing. There are other ideas I can’t remember off the top of my head, but there are many reform suggestions that make sense.

There’s way more to say here, but I think that ultimately trust needs to be built on both sides, crime and bad police actions reduced, and police and community working together to choke out the crime in certain areas. Once these areas become safer, businesses will feel more confident investing in these areas. If I’m a business owner, why would I consider setting up shop in a city just to get my sh** looted? All of these issues build on each other.
