I remember a mid 90's Topps 3D Star Wars set where the fronts were coated with an oily-type substance, most likely to prevent cracking, or maybe even scratches to the surface. A few years later, they did a set for 1999's Phantom Menace and they'd figured out how to not use that stuff, but the cards were still very thick. By the time Topps did the 3D set for Empire Strikes Back about 10 years ago, they'd thinned out the cards. A few years later, they had a fairly eye-popping insert set in baseball flagship. It was a stroke of genius to at last use the technology for a (partial) parallel flagship set, and especially including some update rookies.
