I just got asked a ? via DM that I think may be good to point out the answer here.
I get asked about taking the best versions of a card and sending them in for grading.
I can say that I only tried grading one, in 2011, it was not for me. Bowman Draft, I opened 70 cases, sent the last 10 in for grading.
I think a lot of folks have said on this board before that is why so many of the first listings from volume case breakers go higher is because they know we all open fast and don't grade, so good cards can be bought.
This is true. I don't personally know of any large volume breakers like myself that grade.
Perhaps I should, especially on all these action rookies, but to be honest, most of us don't have time
When I have 10-20-30+ copies of a card, I don't look at them, at all.
I scan one copy, unless it's something I have 3 or less of or a top auto like Benny.
But we are talking lesser things here. I scan all Heritage autos, but not base topps sticker autos.
We just don't have time to look at them all, I rarely get returns (had 4 last year in almost 1000,000 listings), and I try to catch dinged cards but not always possible when shipping so much or moving fast.
So, to answer the question, no I don't pick cards out to grade, hence I don't have them for sell, but perhaps I should, just need time and someone to look over the cards for me.
In general most sellers are so buy, they don't have time for many things.
People ask me all the time, did you hit any of so-and-so, I really have no clue. I open quick, sort, and go. haha. hard to remember 100 different people's guy they collect. I try but it is all a blur, which is sad. Sure, I remember the top stuff, but the other things, not so much.
......
It may be time to rethink grading though with prices being so much lower than normal on certain things that usually only go up or do better in graded form, especially the solo rc actions
But I have little knowledge in grading these days...no time to study that market...always studying next product while trying to wrap up the next one
This takes up sooooooooooooooooooooo much time. I can to bed at 5:30-6am, get up by 10:30, I sorted for days/weeks straight, get at least 150 emails/PM/DM a day, and ship 1000+ packages each week, the time just is not there, but since I am not dumping all my actions etc so quickly this time, perhaps I should make it a priority
My problem is the extra cost and time involved and I honestly could not tell you if it was a 9 or a 10 or maybe an 8, haha, I would look at them too quickly or not notice something.
