The only pre-1956 cards I have are 1952 Topps. I am about 30% finished building a low-number set (1-310) in low-mid grade. I go back and forth between keeping the cards in 8-pocket sheets/binder and in Ultra-Pro Vintage toploaders (made for 52-56 Topps). While I like the protection of toploaders/sleeves, I enjoy looking at cards in binders. The rest of my sets are in binders so I will probably go back to sheets/binder for my 52's because I tend to be a little OCD. In addition, I don't worry much about condition in binders since my cards aren't high grade. If you do move to sheets, I would suggest putting the cards in Ultra Pro Vintage sleeves to add an extra layer of protection.
