Before you ask, yes I did Google it.

I think I know the answer.

Has a WS MVP ever been on the losing team?

The answer is yes, in 1960 Bobby Richardson won the WS MVP even though the Yanks lost to the Pirates that year.

The question is more could it happen again?

More, could Ohtani win the MVP even if the Dodgers lose?

It is clear if the Dodgers win, Ohtani is the MVP, but what if the Jays win?

In game 3 Ohtani reached base 9 times (WS record), and had 2 HRs in the game.

He is also one of 12 pitchers to hit a homer in the World Series, and no one has done it in 50 years.

He is also the only player to ever hit multiple HRs as a pitcher in a WS let alone a single WS game.

Ken Holtsman hit one in 1974, Dave McNally did it in 1965 and 1970, Mickey Lolich in 1968, Bob Gibson in 1967, Jose Santiago also in 1967, Mudxat Grant in 1965, Lew Burdett in 1958, Bucky Water is 1940, Jesse Haines is 1926, Jack Bentley in 1924, Rosy Ryan in 1924, and Jim Bagby in 1920.

So, can he be the next WS loser who wins an MVP?

Not looking for investment, just interesting in the history of it happening.

If the Dodgers win in 6, yamamoto will win it.

WPA has Ohtani leading all players at 0.40, but Alejandro Kirk is right behind him at 0.35 (.357 BA, 2 HR, 6 RBI).

Definitely would be interesting to see if Ohtani wins it (assuming Dodgers win it) given that he lost them a game as a pitcher.

This is interesting. I don’t think Yamamoto can beat Ohtani. Maybe he should, but popularity plays into it is well.

I don’t buy much into what different betting groups say, but Kirk has been good.

No. That would never happen in the modern game. Too much visibility to get away with it.

Also, minor correction, Ohtani hit zero home runs as a pitcher in the World Series. All of his HRs came as a DH. If he had hit them as a pitcher, he would not have been able to continue batting after he was removed from the mound.

I have not been able to watch the games live, so I am obviously combining games.

That does make a huge difference though.

If he throws a complete game and the Dodgers lose does he win?

No one on the Dodgers is playing well enough to consider them for MVP if the Dodgers don't win the WS.

I think if Yamamoto pitches another gem in game 6, and Ohtani's bat is meh the rest of the series, AND the Dodgers win the WS, I think Yama gets MVP.

Ohtani is the hobby darling that most would like to see but at this point it's still a toss up. With the series tied at 2, if any of the aforementioned doesn't add anything substantial while some unmentioned player goes on a two game tear, it can completely sway the outcome.

Everyday role players on star laden squads can come out of nowhere when the expectations are low. How many people remember Jorge Soler just 4 years ago with Atlanta or Steve Pearce in 2018 for Boston.

Take away the 18 inning game and what has ohtani done in this series besides a 2 hr game, almost have a quality start and hit a hr in garbage time?

If Yamamota throws 7+ scoreless and wins he takes the lead if they win in 6.
Ohtani is the Favorite as long as no walk off Game 7 for Dodgers and he doesnt go 1-8 the next 2 games.

Freeman wins if he gets another Game winning hit and Dodgers lock it up that game.

Vlad I think is the only Jay I really think has a shot. Maybe if Barger hits another walk off.

But there's way to much still at play to feel confident in any player. Imo

Aside from Ohtani and Yamamoto, the Dodgers totally suck. BJs are going to win this thing

I have a hard time believing a player on a losing team will ever win MVP again unless it's an absolutely otherworldly performance.
