UD Legends 2000-01 should have been on the list, the first year of ITG Ultimate too.

Some baffling inclusions, and exclusions. It's like they tried to be obscure in several instance just for the sake of doing so.

Taro? It's mentioned along with the fact it was a throwback to 90-91 "when everyone was collecting cards" and the 559-card base set being good for the next generation of set-builders and for being a complete representation of a critical hobby season.

Where was this list published? In their recent magazine issue?

I mean as someone said it's like they tried to go obscure places so you're not gonna have much of an explanation. Personally I find it weird including the Regina Pats Team set which wasn't even pack-pulled just cause of Bedard, it's like because they put his YG in the top 25 rookies they didn't want to double up the same sets for this. Like why this over S2? People who don't watch hockey wanted S2, people who don't watch hockey likely don't know the Pats set exists.

2001-02 Fleer Greats Of The Game should be higher than 12 to me.

The inclusion of 2010-11 Score probably falls in the Dallas area self-love category.

Al Muir and at least one other former writer left Beckett to head up Panini's entry in the hockey card market. They has a decent outlook on what hockey cards should be, including 2010-11 Score, the Pinnacle releases, and others. Their vision apparently did not match with the higher ups at Panini, as they were let go somewhere around year two. There were non-disclosure agreements, so the details will probably never be known.

Muir was rehired by Beckett later in the decade and is currently the Senior editor.

In my opinion, the line-up from Panini was average in their first couple of years. Things improved a lot with Classic Signatures in 12-13 and some great 13-14 products like Contenders, Prime and National Treasure.

I'm surprised 20/21 SP Signature Legends didn't make the cut. It sold out pretty fast and was well loved/holds value.

Certainly possible the 90s throwback efforts may have played a part in the Beckett guys getting let go, but I've got no idea really.

The one thing Panini did not do over the four years was establish a "flagship" release, nothing to center their brand on. Four years is not really enough to judge them on, but apparently the NHL/NHLPA had seen enough.

It's a shame this set had such an awful rookie class outside of Kovalchuk/Datsyuk.

Really missing 21/22 Black Diamond, 17/18 Compendium, and 22/23 Ovation.

But seriously, every single person in here looking at that list can name a mildly obscure set that's better than 80% of what's on here. 03/04 Bowman Draft. 08/09 Masterpieces. 19/20 Chronology. Hell even 14/15 Series 2.

2005-06 UD had Crosby and OVI and Lunquivst--pretty good set

Lists like these are pretty useless, since everyone has different preferences....

My list would include:

2001-02 and 2002-03 Topps Heritage Hockey (the classic 1954-55 and 57-58 designs)

2008-09 UD Masterpieces Brushstrokes...great looking cards and one of the best auto checklists out there

2009-10 OPC Retro inserts....the classic 1979-80 design

The multi-year Upper Deck Heroes subsets and autos

2013-14 Prizm

Pinnacle was a good, cheap break; I broke a lot of 10/11 and 11/12 Pinnacle because of the price point alone. As far as their high-end effort, 2010-11 Dominion was amazing. It had a great mix of legends and newer players with nice card designs as well as a slew of bonus cards per box-pack, although there were some gimmicky cards like huge mem and auto booklets, etc. I guess there isn't a big rookie to chase for that set, though, with maybe Bobrovsky and P.K. Subban probably being the biggest ones. The next few years of Dominion releases never matched the feel of 10/11 IMO. 10/11 Dominion rarely gets mentioned; it's an under-the-radar gem. Loved breaking that product!

Also 2013-14 Panini National Treasures, the main appeal which is the RPAs, including MacKinnon's RPA.

The Regina Pats team set being on there is absolutely insane. A PSA 10 of that card can be had for $200 now. I had a buddy sell a few PSA 10's after his last World Juniors appearance for $3000 each.
