Supercollectors are the ones that fascinate me the most. Especially if it's a failed prospect yet they keep chugging away at consuming everything they can. Then it gets even weirder when they've got 78 copies of a /500 release. Was the end goal to get all 500?

There's some people that collect an obscure player because they went to school with them or whatever, in a way that's admirable. Nothing is worse than the oddballs that only collect Topps Black Parallels. I for one am glad Topps is doing away with them. I have to imagine these people are on a government watch list of some sort.

The one that gets me are the super collectors that will attempt to buy all 5 of a card serial numbered to /5, specifically the red refractors. I could normally care less but when you go to start a PSA registry set and see the cards serial numbered to 5 on the checklist....I just dont bother. Haha. Why try and collect a set when you know you wont ever complete it.

Big35Hurt 02-09-2025 07:57 AM

Frank Thomas and him only. Why? I enjoyed watching a player that could hit for power and average and he's a likeable guy. Also, there are still seemingly endless cards of his coming out, so I will never run out of cards to chase. With that said, my focus will be on cards from his playing days and more specifically 1990s inserts.

What fun is it to collect only those things that are easy to obtain?

I have a couple of failed prospects that I have several /10 Purple Autos of. But to me it's not about completing the run it's more that I know Nobody else will either. :flex:

Hopefully one day those others will give up and throw theirs on Ebay for me to snag. If not I can be satisfied knowing at 5-7 copies I have more than anybody else ever will.

Bambino22 02-09-2025 10:53 AM

Marco Luciano and Yordan Alvarez. Unfortunately I had to cut Soto because of concerns on the teams he joined and to turn into some bigger Yordan cards.

I collect rookie cards, love rainbows!! and focus on flagship and Bowman Sterling. My dream goal is to own 1 of every Yordan rookie card. Problem is this is a 6 figure endeavor.

I just picked up a Marco 1/1 2024 Sterling! And a Yordan 1/1 Rookie Platinum. Been a big offseason for me buying a bunch of big cards.

I will watch every single Yordan at bat during the season.

I have become a big Astros fan because of Yordan. What a great team to root for!

I collect rare issues - sometimes promotional or single-issue sets. Things that most don’t follow or even know about. I just find it interesting and challenging. I also enjoy learning the stories behind these types of cards and sharing them with the community to spread knowledge of lesser-known cards/sets.

It’s a labor of love

That's cool. I love rare types like Topps Industry Conference. What's a good example set of what you are referring too?

Topps Golden Spikes (90-93), 1969 Topps Bowie Kuhn, 1984 Topps Darryl Palmer #801 (my avatar), 1990 Pro Set Lud Denny, 1992 Topps Frank Cashen, 1971 Topps Winner (cards of kids who won a contest), 1991 Leaf Gold Rookies numbered variations, 1990 Score McDonalds, etc.

I have pics and scans, but I’ve posted all before and don’t want to flood this thread.

discodanman45 02-09-2025 11:11 AM

I am mainly consolidating at this point. Going to sell everything I don't love and get bigger cards. If I am buying anything right now, it is HOF on card autos. Just want one for each player.

Been collecting Albert Pujols since 2003. In those early years it seemed like he was overshadowed in popularity by Ichiro. As time went on,I found out he does a lot with kids with special needs through his foundation and he's been pretty much controversy-free aside from that time Jack Clark accused him of doing PEDS lol. I hope to meet him in Cooperstown when he gets elected and get to shake his hand and thank him.

It all started at a show in Cooperstown and a dealer had his 2002 Topps 206 Framed auto for $25. I bought it and told my buddy that was with me that I was gonna start collecting him. Soon after I was scarfing up as many different RCs as I could along with a few autos.

Thanks to similar B/S/T forums like this I got to work trading for base and inserts of his as well occassionaly finding cool cards on eBay. With all that I amassed a few thousand different cards and I'm thinking about going for the 2007 and 2008 Topps Moment & Milestones complete run of /150 cards of him. I think that would look cool in a binder and pages.

I know I'll have nowhere near all of his cards, but it's still fun finding new ones even after all these years.

Devers, Betts, Boggs, Clemens, Nomar, Pedro, Ortiz, Pedroia, and Ted Williams. Only modern cards in Red Sox uniforms. Mostly flagship design cards and heavily on retro designs like Heritage, Archives, Platinum Anniversary, Silver Packs etc. Some Stadium Club but only Chrome parallels. I do have a lot of relics, especially bat relics. For Devers I've also been collecting Chrome Black, Finest and Cosmic because I like those designs. I also collect numbered team cards out of flagship.

I also stick to mainly cheap cards. Most of the sets I collect are inherently cheap and I can get numbered cards for around $5 or less for most guys but I'll spend up to $10 usually. On rare occasions I'll go up to $15-20 for stuff like Gilded because I like that set.

The why is because these are my favorite players on my favorite team during my lifetime as a fan plus Williams because he's the GOAT of the franchise.

Hey hey. Collecting Matt Olson. Started his rookie year and kept going. Probably should have sold off some of his stuff after last year but if history proves me right, in for a big year. Ollie does great in odd years!! lol. He has a chance to hit 60 homers, win a gold glove, a World Series and a MVP. And I can get a bowman chrome first auto for less than $40?!? Sign me up. I don’t collect Olson, I hoard him. lol. Maybe one day he will be as good as judge, and I can quit the bk! lol

Also, I am the Peyton manning topps and topps chrome base card parallel king! lol. Completely career rainbow. Total of 20 printing plates, 3 topps platinum, 3 superfractors, and 5 topps blank back 1/1’s.

Trout! Soto! JROD! Wemby! Luka! Mahomes! McDavid! Bedard! Erling!
Why? Because they’re really good.

I actually used to collect Olson but slowed once he was traded. There's a small handful of 1/1's I'm still after but that's it.

I sold off a lot of what I had (maybe you bought some) but I still have some rare /10, /5 and 1/1 stuff.

YouTheManNick 02-09-2025 01:03 PM

Lately my focus has been on early 2000's rarities with a sprinkle of late 90's.

Early 2000's is a favorite era of mine. A combination of where I was at in life, getting back into card collecting and enjoying the on field product.

I've narrowed the focus down to a couple players and I have binders where each player gets a set number of pages dedicated to them and I'm slowly working to fill their dedicated sections with cool, rare cards.

These players are all what you would consider "Hall of Good." Tier 3, 4 and maybe even 5 guys who will never make the Hall of Fame but had very solid careers.

I like those types of guys. The ones who are difference makers and contributors but not superstars. I relate more to them than superstars. It's easy to a root for a superstar. Give me the guy who puts up solid numbers year in, year out. Makes a few All Star teams but drops off the Hall of Fame ballot after one year.

There's also a couple rare 1/1 parallels from certain sets / years that I will buy of any player for the right price when they become available.

I love the early 2000's before Topps fully took over. So much craziness with the sets. I'm always finding new stuff to chase.

theplasticman 02-09-2025 01:08 PM

Darin Erstad - When I was prospecting heavily in the 90s, I thought he'd be a good one to chase when I read up on him and saw his 95 SP Minors releases. While I worked at a card shop, I helped his sister and mother collect his cards from 95-99.

I'm around 93% complete on his cards without 1/1 factored in. I've got game-worn hats, helmets, around 15 bats, several jerseys (minor/majors), and other cool stuff. His dad gifted me a Cape Cod game bat. That's a favorite item of mine.

Somehow, I haven't met him yet. His sister invited me over for dinner once, but I had a mandatory class project in college I couldn't miss.

Bucky Jacobsen - I saw him hit his first MLB home run during his short but magical run with the Mariners in 2004. It was a fun time as a fan of that team.

I am only missing a handful of non 1/1 cards and have quite a few bats, jerseys, batting gloves, etc.

Aaron Kurcz - He's a friend of mine and was the player included in the "trade" for Theo Epstein. He didn't make the show, but he was close. Unfortunately, there are no game-used items in my collection. I hope to add a jersey someday.

I am missing one card that's not a 1/1. I haven't seen a photo of this one even:
2011 Bowman Draft Prospect Autographs Red #AK Aaron Kurcz /25

Will Clark - I saw him hit the homer off Nolan Ryan and was hooked. I have sold off a substantial part of my collection (over 200 1/1, multiple Red Crusade, executive proofs, samples/promos, etc) but have held on to some cool stuff.

I hoard a few cards, like 1997 Certified Mirror Golds, 1987 Topps Tiffany (I think I have a few hundred), and others.

My PSA registry was the top dog for a long time. I've pieced most of that out, but I have a few hundred PSA-graded rookies left.

I have a bunch of bats, jerseys, batting gloves, etc.

Eddie Murray - His consistency made me want to collect his cards and he was cheap. I still have most everything but stopped adding "everything" in about 2010. Before then, I am around 95% complete.

I have only one game jersey, from the 1995 Cleveland team. Also a few game bats.

slogue2 02-09-2025 01:22 PM

Corbin Carroll. Smaller stature guy with crazy speed, some serious pop, and can track down would be extra base hits in the gap and turn them into outs.

I’ve really enjoyed watching him the last couple years, especially when my favorite team, the Cubs, have not been much fun to watch.

I collect his rookie autos. On-card only. All of the ones in my collection are /25 or less. I do have his 2nd year Cosmic run put together, outside of the super and Lunar /10. That was a relatively easy one to amass. Perhaps the super becomes available one day. If not, I won’t lose any sleep over it.

Edit: 1 rookie auto is /50, but it completed the Definitive Rookie Auto rainbow, so it can stay in the collection :)
