Landed a whale!
Back in 2021 I basically sold my entire collection off and took a big step back from baseball carding. My focus since is keying in on a couple high end blue chip/upside cards each year watching for when it goes to auction or a bin/offers on eBay or Blowout. This strategy is working well as I no longer care to play in the modern card space.
This recent pick up is a card I have been watching for a while. It is not serial numbered but it is not easy to find. I believe it to be one of the single greatest swatch/auto cards to exist. Not the most valuable but definitely a vault card. Willie Mays is on MLB Mount Rushmore and the other guys next to him passed away before auto inserts became a thing. And anyone still alive no matter how good has too many autos. Its just the whole package:
Top 10 player
On card auto
Game jersey swatch (this card would not be nearly as relevant if it was a bat or pants and of course maufactured)
Photo of Willie's most famous play and maybe the most famous play in history
It is insanely beautiful refractor colors like the Aurora Borealis
This came up on eBay a few weeks ago and I made a point to negotiate a deal pretty quickly. It wasn't cheap but it feels like the current market is undervalued. I could see this card pop and double or triple over the next handful of sales. There is a dude pumping one on eBay right now. The ask is high but my guess is the listing will be the next sale for this card.
When considering all that it is this sucker is peak baseball carding. I would love suggestions for other similar cards if you all have any. Maybe Barry Bonds? He has signed just a couple game used/auto cards.
Thanks for looking :)!
