1958 Omaha Cardinals picture pack with Bob Gibson

My dad gave me a couple of picture packs of the Omaha Cardinals from 1957 and 1958. The 1958 version has Bob Gibson in the set. My dad thought the Gibsons alone (I have 2 of them) would be worth $100 or so, but I see a recent set missing one sold for $5289:

Trying to decide what to do with these as I don't collect vintage. The 1957 set isn't very valuable and doesn't seem to have any big names. I am still going through these to determine if the 1957 set is complete. One 1958 set is complete, and the other one seems to be missing two players.

Not sure if anyone here has thoughts on these. Will try to post pictures later.

That Bob Gibson is a HUGE card and people want it. If you posted that on net54 forums, you would get some serious offers there. There are a few people that have been searching for that card for decades! The value in all of those cards is 99% in that Gibson. Whatever that sold for in 2021, it is worth a whole bunch more now. Especially with people chasing truly rare vintage cards right now and the acceptance of more oddball type issues. Would love to see a picture of that Gibson!

Thanks for the suggestion about net54. I have had these for probably a couple of decades sitting tucked away in a little bag. My dad's note about the Gibsons being worth $100 or so was written around the time he gave them to me. He got these as a kid. I never thought much of them until I was going through stuff in my closet last night. Hope to have pictures up tonight!

Thanks for the tip. I try to keep my activity on Facebook to a minimum but may look into those. Seeing that there seems to be some decent value in these, I am considering going through an auction house like REA. Not sure if the value is high enough for them to take these but hoping the ultra rare status and desirability of these makes it attractive to them.

I would seriously consider selling the Gibson by itself. The demand is for that card alone and a lot may weirdly drive down the value you can get.

Valid point. I have been giving this thought all morning. I am not in a big hurry to move these so I think I will probably take them to the Chicago Sports Spectacular in March and talk to Heritage. It was strongly suggested to me to get both Gibsons validated/graded by PSA but it looks like that will cost a chunk of money. At least there should be a good return on them and maybe the grading will lead to an exponentially higher price. I had no idea these were rare and hardly ever come up for sale.

I have the pictures ready to share. Is it possible to upload pictures without having to use a URL?

Edit: see below.

Pic 1 is complete 1958 set
Pic 2 are the Gibsons
Pic 3 is partial 1958 set
Pic 4 the rest (found out 1957 set is also complete and 1956 set is missing two).

Sold them all!

Two beauties! I would definitely get those two graded and I don't know what I would do with the rest of the lot. I don't think it would get much interest.

I would also strategize how to sell two of them. I personally would sell one and hold off one the second one for a 6 month time period. If both are going on auction at the same time, it may be a good or bad thing...

I was thinking of writing "1/2" and "2/2" on the cards to add excitement. Just kidding. I am thinking more and more that I will take these to the Chicago Spectacular and drop them off with PSA at the show but not after talking to Heritage first.

Pop 1 total graded, PSA-2.

I think you'll do well slabbing these if you intend to sell.

Good luck!

Thanks for the info on PSA. I tried to look that up last night and didn't get any results. Probably made my search too specific, but I appreciate the info.

It looks like SGC would be a bit cheaper but may not yield as high of a selling price. I don't even know what to value these as there are very few sales and none over the past 3 years that I can find. That will make it hard to set a selling price if I go the Ebay route (unlikley anyway). I am thinking an auction house is the way to go after grading is done.

Go with PSA. Do not try to save money on the grading of these, imo. PSA, sadly, has the larger market share. Best of luck!
