Cashed out?
Has anyone here cashed out at peak times? Like during 2020/2021 or sold during Ohtani’s 50/50 season high prices. Or when Judge broke Maris’s record? We hear about regretting not selling but what about those who took the opportunity to sell.

This wasn’t at the peak of this player’s career.. but I sold before his cards tanked:
I once had every 2009 & 2011 Mike Trout base & base auto cards. I also owned every Flagship, Topps Chrome, Opening Day, & Stadium Club Mike Trout variation card up to 2020. After one of Mike Trout’s early injuries, I decided to sell it all when he was healthy again. I sold the 2009 & 2011 cards as a lot and I sold all the photo variations as another lot. I ended up using some of the money to buy a handful of Stephen Curry auto rookie cards (including his Exquisite Auto). The rest of the money, I used to help me buy a new car. I’ve been driving my old car for almost a decade and decided to get an electric car. It was one of the best decisions I ever made: selling the Trout collection and going gas-less. I do admit.. the only card I miss is the 2015 Opening Day Photo Variation. The photo is just breathtaking. :) |
I had a decent raw Ohtani collection from his rookie year that I pack pulled. mostly base Topps and Topps Update including inserts and variations I saved but never graded. when his cards were starting to get really hot last year I graded all of them and most got PSA 10. flipped them all for probably just over $1000 in total.

I cashed out on Bonds in 2001 and when the BALCO scandal hit, his card prices crashed.
|
I rarely sell cards or players I like, so I’ve never specifically done what you’re asking, but I have bailed on a few prospects who I didn’t believe in anymore before their markets hit zero. A few names are: Taylor Trammell, Kyle Lewis, and Victor Mesa Jr.

Ouch! Those cards are worth 50x now. (assuming you had decent 90s stuff) |
Sold my #1 PSA Ohtani Rookie Set in 2021 for 8x what I paid. I bought my wife a car, gave a bunch to my favorite non-profit, invested a bunch in Wander (ugh), paid for my sons IT School, and have about 12% left.
My $50 Bowman Chrome were selling for just about $2k. Stupid money in my eyes. No regrets and absolutely right choice for that moment in time. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |
I have done a “limited” cash out a couple times… sold everything that was not numbered or SPd of Tatis, Vlad Jr, Judge, Soto, Ohtani, and Acuna during the 2019-COVID period. Used the funds to buy bigger and rarer cards of the same players (except Tatis - never my cup of tea).
|
I got really lucky and an LCS owner declined to take all of my Ohtani stuff in trade for some Bellinger cards in 2019. I was able to cash out in 2021 and turn it into some better Ohtanis and other PC cards.

Ja Morant.
My first four sales ever on Myslabs in Dec. 2020 were 4x base Prizm Ja Morant PSA-10s I had bought raw for under $20 each one year earlier. They were at PSA FOREVER, but the long delay worked to my advantage $62.95 worth of raw card purchases turned into $2,099 profit. |
Ja Morant, Zion Williamson, and Giannis Prizm rookies helped me pay for Mays and Mantle rookies. The folks dropping four figures on PSA 10 Luka Prizms paved the way for a couple of nice, high grade early Jordans!

Cashed out on Vladdy before his prices plummeted. Nothing insane but a nice profit

Love hearing these stories everyone! Keep them coming!

Sold a ton of raw base Acuna/Soto topps update and topps chrome during the peak a had opened so much Topps Update..unfortunately on the flip side sold off Ohtani base stuff from those sets as well
Same with Zion/Ja Prizm base Sold off Wander and Vladdy before they tanked |
I speculated on Detroit prospect Chris Shelton and sold him when he went berserk in early 2006
This is one of my biggest cash outs - there are plenty of misses in my history as well - Brandon Hynick, Jiwan James, and many more too sad to list |
Sold in 2019, a raw Target Bowman Mega Regular Auto of Wander for $500 (that I pack pulled).
Used those funds to offset my previous purchases at the time of four Giannis 2013 Prizm BGS 9.5 RCs. |

:)! Same here. Many of my biggest gains were on players I still hold, and could have sold back then, but didn't clear out entirely. :( |
I have a combination of laziness, FOMO, and procrastination when it comes to selling cards.
There's a ton a PC's that I still own that I SHOULD have sold. |
I sold tons of stuff at the 2021 peak.... and then bought other stuff at that same peak. So, breakeven. Maybe.
|
I had assembled a really nice collection of Kris Bryants, which I sold as a huge lot for several thousand dollars in 2017. That really worked out well for me.
Unfortunately, I did the same thing with a big collection of Trouts, which I sold right around the same time. Wish I had held onto those until they exploded in 2020. |
Sold an absolute TON during the pandemic and more during the reopening. One shop here in Toronto started up a few months before the pandemic and bought from me like no one else did. I went back to sell at the beginning of 2021 and was told that they would not be buying from me anymore as everything I sold them dropped in value. I asked why they held and it turns out they believed the pandemic hype was here to stay and was stockpiling graded cards.
I had quite a bit of graded Vlad and sold most of it and put some of that money into 1/1s of Vlad. Paid off bills and took the family on some trips with the rest. |
Ouch! Those cards are worth 50x now. (assuming you had decent 90s stuff)
It was all 1986-87 XRCs and RCs. 50 1987 Fleer @ $40 each that are now $1 each, etc. I bought all the stuff when it came out because he was a prospect for the Pirates. I cashed out big time on McGwire and Sosa in 1998, but I had a lot more Bonds cards. |
I once traded a LeBron flagship rookie for a Hunter Pence maunfactured patch auto. So no, I haven't ever made any good financial decisions in this hobby.
|
Great to see everyone on BO selling at peak prices. We must have the smartest people in the card community on here.
|
