Dikembe Mutombo Passes Away at 58 - Share Your Cards, Thoughts & More

Mutombo peacefully passed away surrounded by his family after a long battle with brain cancer. He was only 58. 1991 was a big year in the hobby with the release of Upper Deck and other great sets. There were no bigger rookies than Dikembe Mutombo and Larry Johnson. May his legacy as a basketball player, ambassador of the game and humanitarian continue to influence generations of people not only from his homeland, the Democratic Republic of Congo but all over the world. Rest in Peace to a legend of basketball.

As a 9 year old I remember him being the centerpiece of history and breaking my little Supersonics heart being the 1st 8 seed team to beat a 1 seed team in the playoffs. Well done Mr. Mutombo. Rest in Peace.

That might be my favorite commercial of all time. Spiking the kid's cereal was hysterical.

Rest in peace Dikembe, we need more people like him for sure.

If you were an kid collecting cards in 1991-92, then this card was iconic.

He's one of my generation's unsung icons of the game. We all grew up doing the finger shake after block.

One of the best in any sport. What he's done for people won't be forgotten soon.

I used to own this many years ago, it was a 1 of 1.
Back when Timeless Treasure was a fun product.

Hall of fame athlete, Legendary Human Being

RIP To an amazing guy who lived an incredible life.

Very sad. One of my favorite players when I was growing up and learning the game.

Saturday night I had the thought that I should start a small Deke side PC so I got a '96 Finest Gold Refractor incoming from Ebay that I thought was a steal. 36 hours later he was gone. I'll post when I receive.

I picked these 2 up recently for set purposes:

Perfect post. I thought I was gonna retire off my Mutombo, Augmon and LJ rookies.

His legacy to the game is bigger than any “top whatever” ranking anyone could give. Wish I had a nice Mutombo to share.

When I die I want Dikembe to reject me at the gates of heaven instead of St. Peter

I loved Mutombo in Atlanta. That guy is just a giant walking heart. That man cared so much. We need more people like this in the world. He did so much for his people and his family. He gave hope to so many. I remember he had a house in Marietta, GA I believe. He let so many people live in that house. Not sure if that was his main house but the man tried to take care of everyone. The world lost one of the good ones. RIP Dikembe. You will be missed by all.

Hell, yes! I remember when that card hit $10, which was huge back then -- for a kid. I remember him averaging around 20 PPG for a good chunk of the season and then falling off at the end. He averaged a career high 16.6 points that year and gave me the impression that he'd be much more of a scoring big. When he didn't, I gave up on his cards only to appreciate him more later in the 90s when I became more advanced in my understanding of basketball.

That card is iconic to me, and I enjoy having a PSA 10 of it in my PC.

My only Mutombo card, always been a fan of his personality. RIP.

Only card I remember for him and coincidences with UD’s foray into basketball.

I opened a lot of 91 UD basketball too, the images from the Mutombo & Larry Johnson RCs are forever burned in my brain.

Will be missed.

Such a loss to the sport and community. Heard from some folks that saw him around Atlanta for business and things. The sentiments are all the same. Great, personable and easy-going spirit. Would stop and talk to everyone. RIP
