Anyone lose a bunch of chrome autos in the mail?

Heads up, the photos aren't great, but figured someone might be looking for these, or know the person that is.
Not sure if this was a lost psa submission return (certs all look close in range) or just an oddly similar collection of missing chrome cards up at the same time.

Anyone hear about these being lost? PSA cert range looks to be starting at 8777* with these two being right next to each other on the rack.

Government auction link has additional low quality photos, if anyone was curious.

Completely ridiculous that so many cards get "lost"

Bosoxfan5990 08-17-2024 07:16 AM

Wonder if that's where the Corbin Carroll red /5 wound up.

I have at least one, if not two, CC ‘23 chrome red /5 (non-auto)… which one is “lost”???

Edit: I may only have one… I definitely competed for 1-2 more

Wow! That's a lot of graded cards!! You would think that PSA would be able to at least provide some information as to who originally graded those cards.

I wonder if this is an asset seizure… not “lost”

I'm pretty sure this is a usps lost mail auction, but that would also be interesting.

Unfortunately, these types of auctions are fairly regular. Here's a thread from April (close cert range 8744), that highlights a likely similar situation.

It's most likely stuff seized by the Government (criminals, people who owe tax money, etc.) that they're reselling. It's more like the plot of Happy Gilmore than anything else.

Several more interesting items up in the newest batch of lost/undeliverable mail, but thought I would highlight this absolutely destroyed graded case with a 2023 Derek Jeter auto.

Also kind of funny seeing a National Treasures RC NFL shield buried in a bin of loose cards.

I'm honestly surprised that the government wasn't smart enough to just throw that Project 70 card straight into the trash.

bluebirds987 01-03-2025 11:57 AM

Interesting lot but I always feel that someone massively overpays for these.

Eh, there are decent number of three figure items and at least one four figure item in what is shown clearly. I was going to throw out a decent bid on the value of what’s clear and hope the unshown boxes make it worth the time, but if you haven’t won at three auctions before you have provide a $1k deposit they hold for 60 days.

Way too much being spent on these lots. Unless they go inside information, the values aren't close to what's being pictured.

Yeah these were mine....

The cards were coming back from PSA (through a submitter) and the package blew up... The post office taped the box up and sent me most of the cards... There were about 150 that were lost. UGH.

Sorry to hear, man. Same thing happened to me. No cards were lost, but two cards were completely destroyed.

Its getting to the point where its a better idea to just drive the cards to psa yourself.

I always wondered where and how Atlanta and only Atlanta was getting these huge lots of new slabs and wax on the reg. It doesn't answer why Atlanta and nowhere else because this is a regular thing (Airport hub theory doesn't work since neither UPS nor Fedex has a hub in Atlanta. The police very occasionally sell some of the civil forfeitured items (aka stolen, since criminal forfeiture is a thing) but not with this sort of regularity or quantity, and they tend to sell it under their own account because otherwise the profits go into the general fund and not the police fund. I guess they really took the whole "dead letter office" designation to heart and since qualified immunity applies to even postal employees you have very little recourse. You can actually make some money doing this provided that you have the logistics part figured out. This is true whether you deal with the GSA or one of the thousands of local government surplus/recovered items auctions, but even the GSA doesn't end up with as much collectibles as Atlanta on such a regular basis.

By the way, the inventory for the Atlanta Surplus Center on GovDeals is WILD. Like bidding wars over toilet paper wild. GovDeals at least provides photos that are not 100% potato quality so with a bit of educated guesswork and AI you can even get a rough ROI out of the lot. The US Marshalls conduct their auctions here: https://www.txauction.com/USM btw

Atlanta is the home of the USPS Mail Recovery Center, and the source of these auctions.

https://faq.usps.com/s/article/What-is-the-USPS-Mail-Recovery-Center

If the person above had caught the auction early enough and had the right documents, they might have been able to get the items back. Hopefully there was insurance on the 150 missing cards.
