Baseball card companies used to make cheaper cards for the younger kids to get into card collecting. The retail boxes were always a lot cheaper, and packs were like a buck. So, when Topps big league came out I thought it would be a fun set to do. Easy and all. I was wrong. The boxes and packs are just as much as regular cards, but the cards are cheap, and it is VERY hard to get an auto or gu. also, the Sp's. 1-200 basic set and 101 to 150 one per pack. now I found out there is a 251 to 300 I didn't even know about. How is kid supposed to collect these cards?????

You’ve been bamboozled. You thought Fanatics cares about children? They don’t. It’s all about the bottom line and ROI.

And I hate to be that guy, but you know what the deal is.

Back when I was a kid, the sets were 660-792 cards. There was no chance at pulling a GU or auto in a pack and they were about .35-50 a pack. Different times different poison.

And the idea that BL is no cheaper than regular packs tells me you haven't purchased any "regular" packs lately.

FanTopps cares about, cocaine, a$$ and titie$ at hip hop parties near the Hamptons.

They don't care about the ninos and ninas of the world

Fanatics is trying to groom kids into becoming gamblers. You don't do that by promoting cheap cards -- you do it by emphasizing the monetary value of cards and big hits.

Trading cards have become a luxury item and a gambling product -- no more are they accessible to kids with little to spend. Trading card collecting is a dying hobby.

Honestly, this is spot on. I would not recommend trading cards as a hobby for kids. There are many other better ways to spend your disposable income.

I want to buy cheap cards for cheap, but they look cheap, and I can’t pull numbered parallels and autos easily… and all I got was a collection of cards.

They have always been a luxury item.

You guys are blaming Fanatics, but you have an adult saying, “Hey, I bought this product meant for kids but there’s too many base cards and not enough big hits.” I think that’s the main issue. (There’s plenty of other things to blame Fanatics for, don’t worry.)

Yeah, but it used to be a relatively cheap hobby, accessible to all income levels. It was a childhood fixture for most baseball fans. It was part of a holistic baseball experience for kids, along with playing catch with their pops, playing in little league, watching games on TV and attending an occasional game in person.

Even if they offered cheap items for the kids, the man children on here would buy them all up. Who can blame them? They’ve been bent over for years on prices.


This “hobby” isn’t for the kids. Prices are ridiculous.

Min wage in many states is $15-20 an hour. I should say de facto min wage because you can’t hire people at less than that…no one will work for you. Not sure about right now but average salary in Los Angeles County pre pandemic was $64k a year.

A box of a big League hobby is $50 for 18 packs….$2.77 a pack. Last years with a great rookie class is $30 or less.

What is it I’m missing here with dudes bitching and moaning about “none for the kids”. Are people pissy they can’t buy chrome or whatever anymore?

And as far as impossible to hit autos, please correct me if I’m wrong, but aren’t autos overall seeded appx 1:4 hobby boxes?

Finally I’ll note that they produced so much of this that it’s a guarantee the stuff drops in price within a month or two.

There are 13 year olds with more $ and a more valuable collection than me roaming the National

Same with comic books. Neither are made for kids anymore. They became too popular with adults and the companies started marketing them (and pricing them) to their levels.
