Shai Gilgeous is disgustingly underrated by the hobby and media
I could kind of understand it with Jokic as a big man, but it's jarring watching SGA play and how unstoppable he is, and wondering when people will notice?
Note that I have 0 SGA cards but I will watch every OKC game I can now |
the hobby is in a weird state when young stars aren't even interesting anymore - you'd think Ant and Shai would be way more popular, and yes also Jokic.
I really think Ja and Zion sucked too much money from everyone, it's unfortunate but probably true. |

Everything is going down.
Even the greats. Save for Victor Wadlow (whose cards will inevitably fall after the traditional rookie year euphoria...people never learn), it's all stagnancy and down arrows. If you want bullish activity, go into crypto (which you should have done @24k as I advised). Not cards. This industry is strong bear for the foreseable future. |
Takes 2 posts to get in to prices.
Why complain he's cheap? Just buy and enjoy. At the moment he's just another player that has strung together an MVP season. Hopefully he'll make the conference finals and back it up next season. His Rookie stuff is kinda lame being a Clipper. His NT RPA also sells for thousands. I was in SA in 2015 and Kawhi's was $400. And he had a Finals MVP |
Underrated compared to whom? His prices are not cheap and he is noticed (don't make the mistake of comparing prices now with prices 1-3 years ago, that's an outlier and never coming back for 99% of modern cards). What exactly do you think they should do? He hasn't won anything of note and doesn't even have any remarkable playoff success yet. Where do you think his cards should be? Him and Ant are in that pricing tier under Luka right now, probably around where Ja used to be before suspension+injury, and Luka is already overpriced for what he's done (mf'er is priced higher than Giannis in a lot of the latest sets from what I've seen). SGA and Ant aren't underrated at all IMO.

Also, convince an average 50 year old sports collector that they should invest in someone they (not watching OKC) strictly associate with underwear commercials. Just like Kobe, the hobby love will need to come from the younger generation (who know how to flip between 4th quarters on NBA.com) and that takes time and rings.
The risk for any unringed player is too great. Look at Haliburton. The moment fans start bandying around the word generational he gets Dame irate and that unlocks the floodgates of physicality that ensures he never crosses the paint. But I am sure he is priced 10x Nesmith, so not sure what you are complaining about. Personally, cheap prices are a huge opportunity if you believe in a player. Look at all the threads a few years ago moaning about the Exquisite boxes collectors ripped and sold. By design almost, it takes a lot to move the needle. |
When a player's non-rookie game used patch autos start going for more than someone like Larry Bird or Shaq's game worn patch autos is the point where I no longer consider then underrated and they move into ovepriced turf if they haven't come anywhere close career-wise.

People will notice if/when he leads OKC to some playoff success....he's in a tiny market on a team that is rarely on national TV because of how bad they were the last few years. But if they get matched up in the 1st round of the playoffs against a team with a superstar like the Suns/Pels/Mavs/Lakers/Warriors, people will start paying attention to him very quickly, especially if he leads the Thunder to a series win. You just don't want OKC to end up getting matched up with another small-market team like the Kings. |
His Prizm Black 1/1 RC PSA 9 sold for $196k last night. That's a strong price

Seems undervalued...... :coffee: |

Exactly what I was going to say - his cards have gone up a lot in the last 3 years |
What is OP expecting from the media and fans? He was voted in as an ASG starter by the fans.
The media voted him All-NBA 1st team last year. How much more love is he supposed to get from the media besides MVP? |

But I am sure he is priced 10x Nesmith, so not sure what you are complaining about.
You're about as weird as hermano, the OP can't be expected to know or care about some scrub named Nesmith the only other player OP mentioned is Yokic, so try to keep it relevant to that class of player, for godsakes |
Shai needs to make the WCF period. Get some eyeballs on him since OKC doesn't get many national games on regular tv.
And yet Luka still sells as if he's already etched himself a top 5 all time resume.
I didn't sell a single Luka at the card show I set up at some weeks ago... sold Jokic plenty. Granted, my Jokic cards are way better, but I did have people buying lower-mid stuff, in that range I sold notably Curry, Kobe, 90s, and Anunoby. |

Shais RCs aren't on the team he plays for. Easy turn off. |
He seems priced appropriately, and he's gotten plenty of media attention tbh.

How long does that actually matter? Do Babe Ruth collectors eschew Red Sox bambinos? |
I'd say for everybody that isn't lebron james or tom brady it hurts.

I think for most superstars, cards with the team they had the majority of their success with sell for more than their cards with other teams. Griffey Mariners cards sell for more than Griffey non-Mariners cards. Ichiro Marriners cards sell for more than Ichiro non-Mariners cards. Gretzky Oilers cards sell for more than his non-Oilers cards. Shaq Lakers cards sell for more than his non-Laker cards. Jordan Bulls cards sell for more than his Wizards cards. |
Shai has taken a massive price bump over these past few years, and now, many buyers I have come across are always asking for Shai stuff. While I think he's amazing and a top 5 player in the league, given the current market, his prices are Fair/SLIGHTLY Overvalued.

So like this is a stealth hype thread by someone who bought recently and wants the ride to continue.
As if if I started another Nesmith thread entitled, "Did I make a huge mistake??" |
