The Thread for Reasonable, Informed, and Measured Commentary about A.I.

I decided to dedicate a thread to providing links and discussion about A.I.

What could go wrong?

TheFrenzy 02-27-2024 08:40 PM

There's no way AI will ever be able to reliably predict the outcome of sporting events, right?

Imagine a future where your own face becomes "personal information" that you have to protect.

A world where people regularly wear masks/helmets like a more encompassing Apple Vision while out in public. (Or a burka?)

Only your friends and loved ones get to see your face.

ajlaxmn 02-27-2024 09:00 PM

When I think of A.I. I immediately think of two things.

1. Skynet
2. Dr. Ian Malcolm, "Your scientists were so preoccupied with whether or not if they could, they didn't stop to think if they should"

If AI were to replace us, would that mean less polls?
Cuz if yeah, I'm all for it.

Imagine paying to have a celebrity's face projected on the external helmet screen.

Real-life skins.

But will AI create a BO account and debate with you? :coffee:

Really?

Allen Iverson is the immediate thought that comes to mind.

He didn’t even have time for practice. Why would he debate on BO?

TheFrenzy 02-28-2024 01:16 PM

CAPTCHA has definitely gotten weirder since the AI explosion began.

Blowout.com just gave me this one:

AI practices and would have been a winner. Iverson was a bum compared to the real AI

hairysasquatch 02-28-2024 06:03 PM

I am due for a new phone soon. But Samsung's Galaxy S24 comes with A.I.

I am feeling trepidation.

Trying to parse the conclusion out:
The Gemini controversy has provided fodder for critics on the right, who often accuse tech companies of liberal bias.

But it isn’t really about bias. It shows that Google made technical errors in the fine-tuning of its AI models. The problem is not with the underlying models themselves, but in the software guardrails that sit atop the model.

This is a challenge facing every company building consumer AI products — not just Google.

Based on my understanding of this saga, nobody at Google actually set out to force Gemini to depict the Pope as a woman, or Vikings as Black people, nor did anyone want it to find moral equivalency between Musk and Hitler. This was a failed attempt at instilling less bias and it went awry.
So the AI models are capable of producing accurate (even if offensive) results which in turn led the tech companies to add the "software guardrails" that ended up producing ridiculous and offensive results—but this isn't an example of bias?

It feels like there's some sleight-of-hand going on to side-step the charge of bias.

in another year or two, anyone with a decade’s worth of fb/insta pictures are gonna be able to be turned into a 10-minute, completely realistic porno.

or a 10-second, completely realistic video of them cheating on their spouse. with a dragon. or a unicorn.

anyone is gonna be able to upload 10-15 pictures of anyone else and turn it into anything they want.
