What's up with the blatant shilling recently in Goldin weekly auctions?
Noticed this started a few weeks ago. Every goldin weekly auction there are at least 2-3 random cards on the first page of the auction being bid to like 10x the market price. Some examples from this current auction:
https://goldin.co/item/1997-98-fleer-ultra-star-power-supreme-1sps-michael-jordan-sgc-authente98jh (same exact card "sold" for $1400 in a goldin auction a few weeks ago and also sold on ebay for $1000 a few weeks prior, currently at $7200) https://goldin.co/item/2023-panini-prizm-ufc-superstar-autographs-silver-sa-hsb-hasbulla-magowpvz9 (PSA 9 sold on ebay for $455 last month, this SGC 9 is currently at $6000) https://goldin.co/item/2022-panini-clearly-donruss-night-moves-nm-1-tom-bradysoj11 (PSA 9 sold on ebay for $200 a few weeks ago, this PSA 8 is currently at $2400) At first I thought goldin would step in and remove the obviously fake bids well before the auction ended, but here's an item that went all the way to the end last week: https://goldin.co/item/2022-23-panini-prizm-monopoly-neon-green-19-luka-doncic-01-10hx517 (Raw copies have sold on ebay for around $300, this PSA 10 sold for $6800 lmao) Could probably find even more examples if I looked past the first page. Fake bids being placed even with reputable auction houses is nothing new, but I have never seen such blatantly obvious shill bidding be allowed to occur at PWCC, heritage, or anywhere else. Pretty bad look for goldin. |

I'm all for dunking on goldin but there's no reason they would be behind this or support it in any way lol. This huts them more than anybody since the item obviously won't be paid for so they have to re-list it which is extra work and delays them getting their cut from the sale. Just kind of shocking that they wouldn't recognize these super obviously shills and remove the bids/ban the accounts/IPs of the people doing the shilling.

They aren't stopping it either. So...either they're in on it or they don't care or they're not smart enough to know. ALL = a problem! |
Let's not fool ourselves. It's not just Goldin... it's the whole damn Hobby. PWCC, eBay, Alt, Heritage, Mile High... they all have shilling going on. There will ALWAYS be people who want to drive up the price by bidding with no intention of winning the card.

I gave my dog my phone just to hold and he bid $6,000 please cancel thank you god bless
Business as usual in The Business aka The Hobby. |
Shilling has always been around but it's been more rampant after people started manipulating comps to sell for higher prices at shows. It's comical to see cards get relisted and sell for a fraction of the last "sold" price. It's all about money nowadays so nothing is unthinkable unfortunately.

In my experience, shilling and other dishonest tactics are at an all-time high right now.

Getting impossible to prop up certain cards without serious exposure of "accidentally" overpaying |

Response to issue
In regard to this thread.
Our internal methods had determined that certain items, by the same Consignor appeared to have very irregular bid patterns and we had removed those items yesterday and froze the bidders who were suspect. The cards in this thread including the 1 card that ended last week were also consigned by the same Consignor. We have banned the Consignor and the legal team is working on the matter. We have banned the multiple accounts that we believe we’re acting in concert with the Consignor. We have pulled 100% of this Consignors items, and our general counsel is contacting the winner of the card last week to cancel the transaction. We take multiple precautions to avoid a Consignor trying to manipulate the price of his consigned item, which includes strict vetting of new bidders and credit limits. Unfortunately due to the lower value of these cards, it appears to have occurred, however corrective action was taken. We will be circulating this Consignors name to other auction houses so they are not victims of his actions. If you ever have a question about an item, or want to express a concern and get the quickest possible response, email me directly. Dave@goldin.com |
Everything I'm bidding on is getting shilled.
I'm only going to my max. So much Goldin stuff then moving to ebay and back and forth so on and so on |
2019-2020 was great but we are in for much pain moving forward.
NPBers, returners of cards that “won’t gem.” Gee, wish you could cancel that mortgage contract you signed on that fix and flip when you walked in and saw it’s more beat up than you thought |

Goldin owes me autographs from 1996--still waiting on him and Haiku to come through

Shilling is bad everywhere, I think there are a lot of people who do not realize how badly shilled this entire card market really is.

All these auction houses make MORE money because of shilling. Higher bid prices equals higher commission. I would also be willing to bet that there is a bunch of people who post here do that exact thing on their auctions....

Indeed. The hobby is morally bankrupt. There are a lot of people who are poor enough that they would risk their reputation for $100. |

100 percent true. There are so many sets that people now collect whose origin of collectibility stems from shill bidding. Look no further than the original Precious Metal Gems set. Its popularity gained steam decades ago from shill bidding and now Upper Deck has created a version for every other sport and gaming card, not to mention its employee exclusive cards. This hobby has become more of collect what my neighbor collects vs collect what I like because all of the money and subsequent pump and shill schemers that are rampant through the hobby. As long as FOMO exist so will the ability to Pump and Shill any market. |

They substantiate them. |
This is really crazy to see, but have to admit I give kudos for someone that works at Goldin to directly respond back in these forums. It's appreciated at least by me.
I actually was pretty happy with the auctions that ended last night on Goldin, I picked up one item that I was really happy with the price it sold for. |
Now...do we believe that Goldin really banned the guy and then told the other auction houses, etc? Do they ban everyone that shills? Unless names are named publicly, Im not sure I trust Ken Goldin's word. I could, but I don't.
