Lebron gold /10 purchased, not authenticated, and relisted

So I won a 22-23 Lebron fireworks gold insert (5/10) about a week or two ago. It was allegedly sent to the authenticator, but failed. I emailed both eBay and the seller with no responses.

It’s now listed again.

I assume the seller didn’t like the price, sent a different card for authentication so it would fail on purpose.

Do I have any recourse here? I’m inclined to just win the card every time it’s listed.

KhalDrogo 07-26-2023 07:32 PM

Why is that your assumption?

byronscott4ever 07-26-2023 07:36 PM

It’s not hard to have it fail at authentication—it might result in you getting a better price

ExpFacilitators 07-26-2023 07:42 PM
Why is that your assumption?
What is the alternative? Why is the card allowed to be relisted if nothing was actually wrong?

swerve 07-26-2023 07:48 PM

Eh, I think you are making something out of nothing. The seller has clearly changed their description due to the failed authentication:

The card is in top-notch form, with no grading or defects to report. This is a must-have for any LeBron James fan or sports card collector. Own a piece of history with this stunning trading card.

New listing states:

The card is in excellent shape, a true gem that will make a great addition to any sports trading card collection.

This card showcases LeBron James in his prime, making it an ideal item for any fan of the player or basketball in general. The card is ungraded, adding to its allure as it has not been tampered with or evaluated. It went straight to a case from the box. Factory Prizm surface micro imperfections typical with any Prizm. Perfect corners.

Did the original posting have condition listed? If they said the card was mint and it had a serious flaw, it wouldn't pass authentication. The card could have also be deemed altered by CGC.

Error in condition listing
Error in title
Error in description
Error in item specifics

There’s nothing that stops you from “selling similar”, or even relisted, since there’s no way for an ebay server to know what happened. I don’t get why you’re so upset about something that obviously has no solution. It could have been nefarious as you stated, or it could be innocent and the seller is trying to comply and lowered the listing condition to “excellent”. I also don’t know if that was such a great deal anyway, I see another one went for $350 less just for having a surface dimple.

Btw,I’m noticing those AI generated descriptions so much now it’s annoying

ScooterT312 07-26-2023 10:31 PM

Messaged the guy asking why the card failed authentication.

His response…

“Said item description didn’t fit the card. No idea. Card as I can see has no defects or flaws.”

The whole thing is dumb. Authentication process is not great to say the least.

Is there some sort of new embedded function or plug-in using AI to write eBay descriptions? Over the past couple of weeks, the number of long, useless, and robotic descriptions I’ve seen has skyrocketed.

Yes. Came out a few weeks back.

See if you can buy it for the same price as the op won it at. Then ship the card to op. Op has to pay a few extra bucks for extra shipping but seems like a win for everyone.

discodanman45 07-27-2023 06:38 PM

I still don't understand why the authenticator CGC for raw cards, won't give the buyer the option of still receiving the card. Send the buyer the reason why they are rejecting the card, but allow the buyer to sign-off on purchasing the card with the disclosed reasons. CGC could say that the card is authentic, but is in EX condition instead of NR-MT because of surface issues.

I purchased it again (hopefully). I got it a little cheaper this time so I guess that’s a win.

It’s now been 10 days since I paid and it shows as “tracking number received” only.

I agree the buyer should have the option of keeping the card after learning what made it fail authentication. When I asked the seller what happened he said “no idea. Trust me it’s FLAWLESS.

Obviously it’s not and I’m ok as long as what’s wrong with it is relatively minor/normal QC type stuff. I was going to make the gold set of these but not if I can’t find the Lebron, so I’m just waiting to see what, if anything, will come up this time

fumanchu 08-07-2023 11:05 AM

i don't understand their authentication service, i had a card not authenticated and sent back because there was a error in the item details, then more recently i won a card that was over $1000, most i ever paid and it did not pass authentication yet they still sent it to me, here was their message to me

"We wanted to let you know that your order (below) is on the way, but unfortunately we can’t provide the Authenticity Guarantee you were expecting. The item was miscategorized when it was listed and isn’t eligible for this service. We know this may be disappointing and we’ve contacted the seller to let them know about the error in their listing."

indyguy 08-07-2023 11:50 AM

I had a card go to authentication and Ebay messaged me, with images to show surface issues that were not listed, and still gave me the choice of sending to me, since I won.

I assumed this is what the service is geared toward. Let the buyer know, with new information in hand.

Their email specifically to me stated they could not give me any information beyond some generic “didn’t pass authentication”.

MJ23Collector 08-07-2023 01:14 PM

The Authentification service is useless unless they tell you why it didn't pass the authentification. Whenever eBay asks me for a feedback for a card that was sent to the authentificator, that's what I tell them.

IronCladLou 08-07-2023 07:51 PM

Does anyone read descriptions anymore?

I know I haven't in years, unless i am about to be screwed by a seller

90skid 08-07-2023 08:44 PM

eBay descriptions are getting worse because now they have an AI button that will generate a massive useless paragraph about the card in an instant.

Above about $400-500 I will take time and read but I have yet to read one that gave me more information than I had before I did.

Ebay made some changes to the item condition fields and many graded cards were mistakenly sent to CSG for authentication. Those cards are supposed to be routed to PSA in CA.
