Sealed NES Games
 

Anyone familiar with this market? I'm thinking about grabbing a Super Mario Bros 1 for the NES sealed / graded. Is the market still tanking?

I think its still tanking. The more well know games have been super expensive.

I'd find a lesser known favorite from the 80s and start there. You should be able to find something cool for under 1k.

I have someone I dealt with before offering me a Super Mario 1 and it's pretty tempting. I think the only other game i'd want is Zelda.

The "Market" was massively manipulated via pump n dump, there was almost No Market (extremely niche) for graded vga games before the Wata scam

90% of people who collect games still don't give a what about how pristine the seal is, but to be fair neither does wata

If you are going to buy sealed and want appreciation you are generally better off buying something from the 6th or 7th gen of games, something that still has meat on the bone and will/has a great chance of appreciating in the coming years assuming you are picking the right titles

RPG's, Survival Horror and Shmups genres tend to appreciate assuming the game is well loved or has steadily increasing/exploding fanbase ala Souls games, in this vein earlier games with sequels tend to do well as long as popularity is maintained

Rare games/low print runs also can run up fairly quickly but the hype can quickly cloud things

Came to say this (but Pumpndumpling put it in better words than I would have). So much fraud and shilling in that market, but if its something you want at a price you're OK with - grab it!

Seems like a cool piece to have, I just don't want to overpay if it crashes even more.

Video game values are more cyclical than established, lots of the old stuff falls out of favor with current collectors and prices drop on all but the top tier

There are hundreds if not thousands of sealed copies of Super Mario Bros out there considering there were millions produced along multiple print runs, not a great use of capital unless you just want to look at it, in which case you could easily buy a used cartridge with a nice label for like $5-10

Things have pretty much normalized outside of sealed vintage, which is still in a bubble although vastly deflated

About 15 years ago, I found a sealed NES game on clearance for $1.99 at Half Price Books. It was Golf and I guess since it was a sport game, they thought it was worthless. I think even then I got like $75 for it on Ebay.

20 years ago, there were way less people collecting sealed games, and a few titles people found several cases of in warehouses and flooded the market to the point that you could buy those games for around $10 each in mint sealed condition. Looks like some of those games, like the Aladdin Deck Enhancer games (Dizzy, Big Nose) are still pretty cheap sealed because of warehouses full of unsold stock. I used to have some sealed cases of the Deck Enhancer and games that I bought in bulk for around $5 each.

I sold most of my vintage game collection when my daughter was born. I had almost a full set of NES games, about half of them complete, and every accessory. Also hundreds of the Famicom games. Got less than I paid due to the recession (2008) at the time. Unfortunately, that's also when I sold all my gold/silver comic books, including titles like X-Men #1, Avengers #1, Hulk #181, and a nice collection of pre-code horror. The prices were so low at that point in time it's sickening.

I have just started dipping my toes in this market and have been tracking the market. I just bought a raw nes Zelda full set. I think if graded it would come in at a 7 or 8 and paid $460 for it. I am tracking a Super Mario NES set but they go for big money. I would say Mario and Zelda nes games are the holy grails of the gaming world. Yes, Atari was first but nothing like the nes and they will fetch big money. The video game industry has massively grown and will continue to grow. I will buy Goldeneye 007 N64, Super Mario Nes, original Madden, Mike Tyson’s Punch out, Mario Kart 64 and Contra nes. Some of us in here are into it and the market is growing. You aren’t alone in this hobby for sure.

Yes; I had a collecting friend (since passed, sadly) who had 18,000 sealed copies of those six Aladdin deck enhancer games. I’m not sure if he had 18,000 total or 18,000 of each, but there’s no doubt that they are ultra common.

And I’m sorry that you sold your stuff for prices that now look cheap; that’s the way it goes I guess but those bad decisions hurt more than the good decisions feel good.
