Ebay Sales Down

Has anyone else seen a downward trend the last 2 months on ebay? The last two now have been as the history shows my lowest 2 since January 2020. While Standard Envelope is keeping me busy and still selling volume the higher $ amount items are not selling like they have. If the trend continues looks like I will not even come close to 50k this year.

My September was down but my October was HUGE. That was driven mostly by Yordan Alvarez though.

The other thing I notice is our sales for the year are similar in terms of dollars, but I've sent out 1/4 as many packages as you.

DynaEtch 11-01-2022 06:19 AM

My sales have also been down sept-oct of this year. I find myself using the 'send offer' feature more and more in bulk to watchers..even with that still not a lot of action.

I deal primarily in the nonsports trading card category, so not season specific or anything.

beauspencer 11-01-2022 08:12 AM

October was my best sales month of 2022.

But, August and September were 2 of the 3 worst months for me in 2022.

theshowandme 11-01-2022 09:21 AM

I'm sending offers but sellers want February 2021 prices

prospectorgems 11-01-2022 12:35 PM

September was just absolutely awful for us. Picked up in October though and figured it was just ebay being ebay with their algorithms and decided to actually let us sell items again.

premium1981 11-01-2022 03:15 PM

My October was massive. Change what you are doing if your sales become stale. Change pricing, run sales, send offers, do quantity discounts, list more new items, etc. Not to sound like motivational speaker or anything, but only you can control your destiny.

Yes, the overall market and the hobby market is down. But there are still millions being spent every single day. Find a way to get the few hundred bucks or few thousand bucks you need. Grind if need be. My wife tells me that I am too stubborn to let a recession hurt my sales. I refuse to accept lower numbers than what I want.

byronscott4ever 11-01-2022 03:49 PM

I found myself buying more last month…which means I’ll have more to sell

It may sound simple but I agree…I feel like every day needs something to be done. Some days I just end listings and relist at same price or a bit lower and that leads to sales. Patience helps too

So funny, I was about to come in here and start a thread.

I normally sell via BIN but decided to run some auctions the last couple weeks. Sales we HORRRRRRENDOUS. Early LeBron SPGU Dual Patch /25 that I thought would get close to $300 gets $92. Superfractor rookie card of a promising prospect gets $42. Orange chrome mega auto /25 of a decent prospect gets $29.

Just stunning.

Very similar experience here. Even having trouble moving low dollar items that were selling all summer. Wondering if the election has people spooked.

You mean like COMC prices?

Well 643 day streak has now ended with NO SALES on the 1st day of November. I have increased my listings from about 1500 to 2400 total items.

As one poster put the elections may have some worried , but I do think the economy is really tightening belts. Well at least I do have a regular job, retirement and VA Dis. Ebay is not my main income.

Only run on auctions on items that are blazing hot, or that you care nothing about. Even during good markets, auctions get lower results. During down markets, they can get very bad. You have fewer buyers competing, so the end result is much lower.

With BIN prices, you don't need competition. All you need is a single person to pull the trigger. Big difference in end result.

Sellers are sending messages like this for 10th year cards when presented with Finest, Pristine, Chrome, etc. comps for the same player

Good luck out there

Yes, very much so. I always find it hilarious those who advocate to list auctions; I’ve even had people argue with me that auctions bring higher prices than BIN. Always amazed people believe that since just a modicum of research quickly proves otherwise.

The superfractor wasn’t a RC. It was a Pro Debut in a minor league uniform. His red from the same set sold for $5.

The “decent prospect” is a 22 year old in high A. His blue Mega auto sold for $8.50 earlier in the month.

And your LeBron dual was LeBron paired with Larry Hughes. A LeBron/Melo dual patch just sold for $338.

You auctioned three cards that have absolutely no market, and clearly had expectations way out of proportion to reality.

theshowandme 11-02-2022 08:15 AM

What on earth does the election have to do with selling baseball cards?

premium1981 11-02-2022 08:28 AM
What on earth does the election have to do with selling baseball cards?
It doesn't have anything directly to do with cards. That was a dumb comment. But, the two potential outcomes will have vastly different indirect impacts over the next couple of years. The same as it will for any other market. But this is about ebay sales, and the idiots on both sides of the isle need to keep it out of these threads.

Example from this week:

Topps Chrome Jared Walsh /25. 2021 All Star for the Angels, struggled last year but definitely some upside.

Auction starting at $0.99. Win it for $0.99. If the seller had listed it for $9.99 BIN or OBO I would have pulled the trigger.

This is a very fair assessment, and a fair indictment of me (and I think many other sellers). I really appreciate you taking the time to do what you did - it was a reality check I needed.

I fell into the trap of looking up generic comps on those three cards, for example, rather than anything specific. For the "decent prospect" - Heriberto Hernandez - I compared his base orange Ref Auto RC /25 to his mega. Clearly unwise. Two of those cards were pulled in packs, so I did not know the markets of their cards. The LeBron I bought during the boom on Mercari for $150 thinking it was an easy flip. Then it languished on eBay BIN for months, and I looked up "LeBron SP Game Used patch" and saw some nice sales for what I'd considered to be accurate comps.

This is a lesson in setting the right expectations and doing the right kind of research. Appreciate it again.

paulcarlcards 11-02-2022 05:56 PM

Sales and profits have been growing by double digits every month for me but I sell low end stuff in volume with virtually $0 in COGS. It’s a huge relief to not have to worry about swings in pricing/popularity or having big $$$ tied up in inventory with this route.

People are skittish right now for a lot of reasons. When there's uncertainly, such as about the election, people are going to hold off on purchases.

The economy will not improve on November 9th regardless of who wins.

That's a myopic view of a complex problem; most relevant to this thread and discussions of card purchases would be that total credit card utilization has been steadily increasing (13% in Q2). People are putting more and more of their monthly/every day expenses on credit cards, meaning they don't have much cash, period.
