Questions about '61 Cousy Action-need advice
I've got this Cousy, graded years ago, with an (OC) qualifier.
Questions: Would it be worth it to resubmit to PSA and request no qualifiers-hoping to NOT get a grade hit? Or would it be a waste of time and money? How much do you think the (OC) lowers the price from a 9 with no qualifiers? Any help/opinions greatly appreciated! posted on grading forum but got no takers/posters |
A 9 OC would be equivalent to a 7. With that centering, a 7 would be the best you could get. However, being an old label, I would personally put that card at a 6 in value right now. Most older labels are graded less strictly than new PSA labels.
If you can get a PSA 7 in a new holder, it would personally carry more value to me than a PSA 9 OC. I stay away from all qualifiers. However, some people will pay premiums for a 9 OC. The cost of reholdering and the risk of getting a lower grade might not be worth it. My advice to people that have PSA slabbed cards with qualifiers like this and don't like qualifiers is to sell the slab you have and buy the card you want. Personally, I would sell this and buy a centered PSA 6 or 7 version. However, if you have attachment to this card, do what makes you happy. |
Thank you for the advice. I'll probably try to sell it and buy the 6 or 7. Not sure why cards with qualifiers bother me, but they do.

I used to hate qualifiers but now not so much. I think they can speak to the overall condition of the card other than what area required the qualifier. With that 9 OC you know that otherwise that card is in amazing condition. With the 7 grade there may be multiple areas that are causing it to fall into the 7 range without being so obvious why.

The older label itself would drive some people away...but it is a sharp card

Just get it reholdered with a fresh label. There would go the "old label" stigma. Also, I think a 9 OC definitely is worth more than a 7 - sell it as it is.

Thank you for the advice.

Just out of curioisity, what does a PSA 9 turn into if it has an OC. If you remove the qualifier? A PSA 7?

"Most older labels are graded less strictly than new PSA labels." Which is also what I was wondering, but didn't ask about stricter grading nowadays. I wonder if I cracked the Cousy case (which won't happen) and submitted this card what it would come back as... Oh well...one of these days I'll send in for reholders on Cousy and Pete. Maravich is a straight up 7 a bit more off center. Cert# on Maravich seems to be way older, starts with 03... Until you get slashes through the 0's, you don't have the original 1991-1992 PSA first flip. Here is my Feller that is from the beginning. |

nice card
First - that is a very nice card. I like the original PSA holder for card grades. Mike Baker did a lot of the grading then and at the time he was highly respected.
Depending on the day and the grader I could see that card getting anywhere from a 6 to an 8 with no OC qualifier if you re-submit it. To collectors who do not put a huge premium on centering that card would be a sweet ad and I think it would sell for more than the average 7. |
