In ground basketball hoop advice.

I am having a concrete slab poured for a work shop I am having put in soon and figured I could extend it out in front of the building. Maximum size of the slab is going to be 30' x 27'. The smallest would be 30' x 24' the size depends on me being able to purchase a few extra feet of property from my neighbors. The 30' would be the width of the court.

I am looking for advice on backboard size for a slab that small and recommendations for brand/model. I was looking at maybe the one linked below from Dicks but not sure if a 72" wide backboard would be functional on such a small court. Budget would be no more than $3k.

Preferably closer to $2K so I can get accessories. I've checked youtube and google but figured I'd look for opinion here as well.

That one seems very nice.

Boy does that set up take me back. I said under $3K. The cost of having a utility poll installed with having to buy a sheet of plywood I just couldn't afford it.

Plus it has nba written on it. The cost to have that is too much.

Do not play basketball. Your dream of being the new Steph Curry can not come to fruition.

Looks like a solid hoop. 1/2 glass, 6" x 6" post the only hold up would be the 36" overhang, not sure I'll have the room. Does the 60" backboard seem large enough. My main hang up is the backboard size. I read a full 72" backboard may not only look odd but could effect play on smaller courts. It didn't specify actual court size in the article.

60 is plenty big enough unless you are Russell Westbrick. We have a 54 its fine.

Make it 8 feet and show off your leaps to the neighbors

It’s the perfect size honestly

Last year I bought a goalrilla, I got the 72" backboard because that is regulation size from AAU up.

I love the goalrilla it's a seriously sturdy hoop and great quality. I had to dig a 4ft deep hole 12x12 ballooned out to 36" for the bottom 2 feet. Took over 1200lbs of concrete. I can't remember what I spent on it, maybe $2500 with shipping?

I certainly don't think the backboard size has any impact on the play.

Are you getting it for your kids to practice on? You just shooting around? If you're just putting it in to shoot around and have fun occasionally go with the smaller, cheaper backboard.

If you're putting it in for your kids to practice I would absolutely go with the 72" as it is regulation size.

Larger backboard is more for bank shots and more of a real playing feel. Not sure if it makes sense with a smaller court. Was hoping someone had a similar sized court here.

I don't think my neighbors would care even if I was throwing down windmill 360 dunks at 10 feet. I will be lowering it to 8 feet on occasion anyways. :)!

Thanks, how big is your court roughly?

I put in a few volleyball posts so it sounds like the same thing I did for those. The court is for me. I plan on playing on it and shooting around. Always wanted one as a kid but we moved so much and by the time I bugged my step dad enough to finally hang one from our garage we moved a month later.

I've narrowed it to two hoops. The Goalrilla and the Megaslam. Goalrilla would be around $2000 before tax but wouldn't come with any padding. The Megaslam seems a little better made and comes with a thicker backboard, pole, and all the padding is included. Also going to go with the light. So all in all it would run me after tax just under my max budget of $3000.

What size court do you have yours on? Any rusting issues with the Goalrilla? I've got my grass volleyball court a little more than 10 feet from it don't want to go any closer for safety reasons so space is an issue.

No rusting issues and I know people who have had them for 5-10yrs+ never had any rusting issues.

So I have a 2 car-wide driveway with a cutout that can fit 3-4 more. I don't know the exact dimensions but maybe like 40X40 with more space down my driveway that's not really part of the "court".

If you don't really care about the extra cost I would definitely go with the 72" based on my personal preference. If you play league or at the rec or anything they'll also likely have 72" so I prefer just playing on the standard size.

My driveway is wide as opposed to deep… could probably park 5 cars on it side by side?
My driveway is wide as opposed to deep… could probably park 5 cars on it side by side?
So you have a large driveway too. I'm hoping putting in a small court isn't a waste of time. I basically squeeze every single square foot from the area I have to work with.

Thanks. I wish I had to room for a 40x40. My court is going to be 27 deep and 30 wide with only a 2 foot backboard overhand and my workshop on the right side of the court. Its not ideal.

The hoop is for me. As long as it is under $3,000 I'm fine. My biggest concern was the space for a full size hoop. My days of playing in any sort of league are probably over but I still want to play 2 vs 2 or 3 on 3 with friends. I used to play more under the hoop with a good post up game and I was quick and could blow past people from the top of the key.

Now I am much slower but have learned to shoot lights out from deep. This small of court takes away what I am still good at. I guess I'll go with the 72" and if it doesn't work I have a small piece of land left at the base of a hill I could work with later on and just move the hoop there.

If my damn power/cable lines weren't directly in the way of paving my driveway and extending it a bit it would be perfect. I think I am going to go with the Megaslam 72" Hoop. Slightly thicker backboard, all pads being included and 5 Gauge Steel 8x6 pole won me over. With the lighting system everything after tax should run me under $3000.

I put this one in last summer and have been very happy with it.

Thanks for the advice guys. I ended up getting the Megaslam 72" with light system for $2950. Talked with my neighbor and I'll be buying a few feet of their property and am able to at least make the court 27 feet deep like I was hoping.

You installing it yourself?

More than likely. Seems pretty straight forward.

Do you play a lot? 3 grand for an outdoor hoop seems like a crazy amount. I feel like you could get a really nice hoop for under a grand. Is that including the price of the cement for your work shop?

I don't think you can get a quality hoop for under $1k. Especially not an in-ground one. Maybe you can get some lesser brands but then you have to deal with rust and other quality issues.

I learned a long time ago from buying tools you save money by going with quality over being cheap and buying lesser quality. Cheaper hoops are going to rot out and or break in just a few years. In the long run you’re better off spending the extra up front. The hoop also has a pretty good warranty. My cement pad is likely to run 2.5x that. You’re not buying a good in ground hoop for under $1000 unless it’s second hand and someone is looking to unload it.

$3,000 isn't that outrageous at all for an in ground hoop

Did you look at the links that were provided?

Most of us have spent $2,000 to $3,000 - The one we just bought, now I paid for installation as well, was just over $3,300 total

Unless you want something cheap that isn't going to withstand the weather and/or isn't a true in ground hoop
