You all may know me as gemmintpop1 on IG. I wrote this paper for fun, and was encouraged by some hobby friends to share on BO. Enjoy!

This is the type of content that used to be flooded throughout the forums. Nice work!
We need more contributors doing stuff like this. I also want 500 words from ninja on the topic. For 2022, be the change you want to be and see. You've sold me on the Titan inserts. I wonder how many other sets Panini has ripped off... |
Whether or not they catch on, really like the take and the effort to write it up.

Very well written and was an interesting read, thanks. Coming from someone who doesnt know much about basketball, I learned a lot about these.
You make some interesting points about similarities. To balance things out and hear an opinion from the other side of things, Box topper vs pack inserted is a large difference We've seen a lot of cosmos related designs in cards, the PMGs (talking about the original 97 and ones you see in Marvel and hockey sets now) have that distinctive solid-color etched foil filling the background, so visually and card tech-wise are somewhat different Branding alone does have a large impact in the card hobby. I collect marvel cards and UD could make colorful, shiny and neat inserts all day long, and they do, but it's just slapping that Metal and PMG brand onto a set that really has the huge impact on the collectors and gets them going (and particularly with Marvel right now...flippers and investors). Not trying to negate everything you're saying, just offering a different side. Also maybe Im not understanding the part where you are talking about Panini choosing not to go the route with the PMGs for these- maybe that's not what you're saying, I cant tell- but Panini doesnt have a choice to release these as PMGs, they cant. As far as I know the Metal and PMG brand is owned by Upper Deck, who bought the rights of Fleer way back. Im not sure Panini here is really doing something out of the goodness of their heart or anything in this instance, they just added what seems to be a cool looking insert as a box topper to entice buyers. Seems a little speculative in that part. I enjoyed the read- well done paper and I can tell work was put into this, it's very professional-looking. I especially liked the inclusion of the Thanos part at the end as a Marvel collector. Thanks for sharing. |
Thanks DynaEtch. Appreciate the response! On the part where I discuss the subtle release, I was trying to convey Panini could have done more to showcase the Titan. They can’t use PMG, but they could have done more to advertise its release and chose not to do so.

Awesome write-up! Really loving those purple flux titans, I suspect they look amazing in hand. I also like that they didn't parallel this one to death, sometimes less is more.

Good write up sir.
I love the KD FOTL version. I want to see them in hand before I make a purchase! |

Cool stuff, like GeechQuest I miss posts like this, so don’t take this the wrong way, but weren’t the pmgs designed by Arena Design, not Marvel? It was my understanding that only the base artwork of Metal were made by Marvel artists.
You also might want to include mention of the Precious Metal (aka silver) parallels of 96-97. |
Regarding the Arena design vs Marvel artists and PMG vs Base Design, I’m not sure! Maybe someone else can confirm. I’ll reach out to Jean. Also, good catch on the “Precious Metals” parallels. I’ll let you take credit for that one. [emoji106]

Fantastic read!
I was sold on these cards the minute I saw the first person post their purple scope encased Titan card on the Flux thread (reminded me of Championship PMG). Learned a lot from this thread, thanks OP! Quality post here. |

Great read, but keep it down..I'm trying to get a few more cards before everyone catches on and they take off to the moon.

I really enjoyed this. It feels like Panini has been really lazy as of late. If a lot of these design elements were as intentional as you suggest, I wish they'd talk about it more! It would definitely make their product more valuable in my eyes. Great work!

Grabbed a Zion gold scope. Stunning card in hand.

Just based on your user name I will go ahead and take a guess that this paper is about nothing more then you pumping a brand/insert set of a bunch of cards you already own and are going to list for sale right after your pump

Well my eBay username is in my bio if you want to track and make sure that doesn’t happen. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |
I could see a comparison being made to the 97 PMG Championship... same circular "scope" effect... but the classic red and green PMG? No. Because those are based on an iconic base set that combined hand drawn and digital graphics and by the way had the artists credited on the back. Has Panini put such effort into any card since the first year of Kaboom!?

We all know that’s happened here before, but it’s also why we don’t get posts like this anymore, either. And that sucks. Whether he’s reaching or not, at least people are actually talking about card design again. The next retort could even be seen as valid, as it’s just more pmg talk. That’s still fine, because I hope it makes people talk about the design of many other sets. |
