What grade would you give this 1960 Bob Gibson
Seems pretty clean for a vintage card...

Pictures too small, but if it's as clean as you seem to think, an 8(OC) or a straight 5 for value. Highly off-centered in two directions.

Sgc 5. Psa. 7 oc
I’m no expert but just a guess. Good luck! |

Thanks. was thinking something along those lines.
Are either of those good grades for a 1960 card? I'd send to PSA over SGC. Larger pics |
I would say it's not worth grading unless it's for your personal collection, but you can check PSA's sold listings for a similar graded 8(OC) and see if you think you can make a larger profit by grading.
Bottom Line Up Front: People hate off-centered cards, no matter how attractive they are. |

which means I definitely overpaid for it  |
And I now see that PSA 4's go for over 100, but the PSA 8 (OC) only went for 97.

Maybe it just me...But I prefer a card with sharp corners and a nice surface that is OC, over a card that's perfectly centered card with dull corners and a blemished surface.
When I was collecting as a kid, the only thing I really looked at were the corners. I wish I would have known back then that centering would become such a big deal breaker for future value. |
It's a nice looking card. I think it would have a shot at a 6 with no qualifiers but it is o/c two different ways which no doubt hurts value.
|
Some years oc is bearable but 1960 is not one of those years

Agree with VanLingo. It is at least a PSA 5 with a shot at a 6 with no QC.
I think it is worth grading without qualification for the possibility of a 6. A higher grade with no OC will likely be worth less IMO. |

If you never overpaid for a card you will never learn from your mistakes. I did the same thing with a 1974 Winfield rookie. It was off center and I thought just because it had sharp corners it would grade well. If you are planning on flipping this card I would just sell raw and try to recoup part of your money that way. However, if this is for a PC I would definitely send it in to PSA and have it graded for $12. I have a 1976 Dennis Eckersley rookie I sent to PSA to get graded and it will be a PSA 5 or 6 as well. However, it is for my PC and when I can upgrade it in the future I will. Right now vintage is getting out of control and I can't find any deals right now on ebay... |

Thank you. Its definitely for my PC. I just need to understand that people value centering over other flaws. |

You win some, you lose some. I overpaid on this because I underrated how much value it lost because of the OC. I think I got a steal the other day when I purchased a super clean 1990 Topps TIFFANY Griffey for $15!! |
For those not familiar, keep in mid a qualifier is worth 2 grades... an 8 OC is lie a 6, etc.

Condition started with corners/surface/photo registration and moved to centering from there. As a pure collector, I would be quite happy with that Gibson. There's something for everybody's tastes I guess. |

Yup. Centering was the last thing I looked at. Unless half the players face was off the cardboard :) I like the Gibson. I prefer a clean card that's OC, over the other way around. |
5ish. Dont sent to sgc they will kill it with that centering.

I used to think that a sharp card that is off center is the way to go but the $$$ says otherwise. Centering is #1 and ALWAYS will be. Mike |

So...I finally received the card yesterday...and yea its as OC as the pic above....but man its such a clean card (corners, edges, surface). You would never believe the card is 60 years old!
So yea...the OC give is poor eye appeal...but I like! lol |
So are you going to grade or just keep in a toploader? BTW, I will show you two cards I bought and one was my biggest mistake ever and one card that evened it out. I paid $91.19 with taxes/shipping for the Winfield raw. One of my first purchases. Always wanted this card from my youth. The card has amazing corners, but the way they took the picture it looked like a PSA 8. As you can tell from the centering it isn't. Still disappointed it didn't get a 7 though... I still may crack it and try again for $12 and send in my next value shipment. So I paid $91.19 for a $40 card. However, I bought the Stockton shipped for $8.54 and it graded a PSA 9. These two cards cost me $137.73 (Purchase/taxes/shipping/grading included) combined with my biggest mistake ever. Even with that mistake I broke even with another card. I could have returned the Winfield, but I was the idiot. I only returned one card ever because the seller posted a picture of a card, but sent a different card in worse condition with paper loss. Blocked that seller and moved on. Overpaying in the beginning is fine because you will catch on fast. You will learn even more after you start submitting your cards to PSA.
