Rowdy Tellez and Lourdes Gurriel Jr.

With Bichette and Guerrero Jr. getting most of the hobby love the Jays other two “young” guys are quietly outperforming both. Anybody else think either one of these guys have potential?

MiamiDolfan007 09-08-2020 08:49 AM

It's called a hot streak in a band box park at Sahlen Field. Tellez doesn't consistently hit lefties enough and Gurriel Jr. has a history of being injury prone.

smapdi 09-08-2020 08:54 AM

Tellez is turning into a fine hitter, but he is likely always going to be dismissed in the hobby because of the chonky boi image unless he REALLY mashes. Unfortunately, he might need 50 homers to really grab attention.

Gurriel, too, is becoming a good hitter, but he's not really doing the things you need to do to become a superstar at 26. Not that that's bad, but the hobby loves minor league dudes with potential to be become major leaguers a lot more than major leaguers playing at a major league level.

ottobord 09-08-2020 09:07 AM

Gurriel and Bo are the two best players on that team, get Gurriel now while he's cheap.

Danderlion 09-08-2020 09:11 AM

Lourdes is a great ball player. He will continue to produce, but I don't see him getting much love in the hobby (now or future).

I have faith in him as a player so I've picked up some decent RCs and 1st chromes, but I do not expect any large increases in his prices although I wouldn't mind it :D

Answer: 2 players who I continually receive in packs of Topps baseball cards in mass quantities

Teoscar has outperformed all of them this year. And I don’t think I’ve even seen him mentioned on these boards. Too bad he got injured. Had a legit shot at The HR title. But he’s been team MVP up until this point. Not sure what the hobbyist think but his swing is pretty damn slick. As long as he has a good approach he will hit.

Lefty

These two players are like the Jays, no one cares. In the next 2-3 years they will become household names along with the other Jays. This team is going to be really good and no one sees it except people that watch them consistently.

Yaga 09-08-2020 10:16 AM

As a big Jays fan, they're both really good players but I don't see them ever being hobby relevant

BigSlim16 09-08-2020 01:32 PM

There’s (unfortunately) a difference between hobby good and real world good

Triple B 09-08-2020 03:15 PM

Gurriel was just named AL Player of the Week. He's good WHEN he can stay healthy. Regardless, I LOVE what Mark Shapiro has done with this team.

Gurriel is super streaky. I’d expect a lot of production from him in the coming days.
Don’t know much about Rowdy other than he looks like he’d thrash a beer league. So many live bats in that lineup. Clutch that Bichette is soon to return as Teoscar hits the DL.

Granted not a huge sample size but he seems like a pretty decent fielding first baseman from the games I’ve seen.

eye4talent 09-08-2020 04:00 PM

At his best, Tellez will probably bat .270 and hit 32-34 HR. And maybe he reaches 250-300 HR for his career. But I don’t see superstar potential there. (Poor man’s Kyle Schwarber.)

Gurriel definitely has some significant potential, as we saw in his half-season of work last year. He’s gotten somewhat of a late start to his career, though I could see him having some all-star seasons.

But not only are these two overshadowed by Vlad and Bichette, but Teoscar has been their best player of late (at least pre-injury).

I’d say Tellez and Gurriel probably don’t have much hobby-wide appeal. But if you’re a Jays collector, then this is a great situation for you. Back when my Giants were winning titles, guys like Brandon Crawford, Brandon Belt and Matt Cain were collectable—in addition to Posey, Lincecum, and Bumgarner.

Nobody mentions Biggio?

I think he's the best all around player on the team, we've yet to see enough of Bichette (He's good but he's yet to hit his first slump).

Biggio get's on base, steals bases, scores runs, has decent power and plays literally every position, and every day. He's on pace for around a 5 WAR through his first 162 games.

Biggio is Toronto’s best kept secret. Dude is (to borrow a phrase from above) a poor man’s Bellinger. Groshans will be Kris Bryant lite and Austin Martin is Mookie Betts lite. The Jays have done an incredible job drafting and developing.
Anybody else think either one of these guys have potential?
Neither will be stars or hobby stars. Debuted too old, and the production for both is minimal through the late 20s. If by potential you mean ability to contribute to the Jays and even help them win a WS, then the potential is there. If you mean value potential in the hobby I don't see it.

I honestly wouldn't mind seeing increased interest in 'merely' good, solid players who are not absolute stars. The way the hobby is now, you never know. It could happen especially with numbered cards, parallels, etc. But I wouldn't buy either unless you like the players or are a Jays fan, etc.

Biggio is okay, but he’s not Toronto’s best player, nor is he a superstar on the horizon. He’s an un-juiced Steve Finley who plays some
second base.

That’s not a bad thing—an average hitter with 20-20 potential can be an asset to a competitive team. But he’s 25 and hasn’t really done anything spectacular yet.
